Commercial Design: Restaurant Design and Layout

Ted & Lo’s Bar and Grille was a school project which required me to design all aspects of a restaurant from the floor plan to the color scheme. I found that my time spent working in many restaurants helped me to design a restaurant that could function efficiently and enjoyably for not only the wait staff and kitchen staff but the cliental as well.

Ted & Lo's Bar and Grille is a rustic theme restaurant and bar that serves bar style food such as wings, burgers, pizza, and salads. The focal point of the restaurant is the bar which has a brick wall and three large flat screen television sets. The bar is equipped with coolers, ice, hygiene station and booth a glass rack and wine rack. The location of the bar is set up with a close server satiation for the convenience of the wait staff and the kitchen is just beyond the bar for the convenience of the bar staff. The lighting is subtle and all recessed lighting is installed with a dimer in order to set the mood and atmosphere appropriate to the time of day. There is a small side bar to the left of the bar for those who are looking for a quieter setting or those waiting for take-out. The bathrooms are located fairly close to the bar with the intention that those drinking will need to use them more frequently then those who are not. A small step sets the bar setting a foot higher than the rest of the restaurant. The walls surrounding the bar are only knee walls and display a number of sepia style photos submitted by those living in the area. The booths along the far wall of the restaurant were designed to aloud the tables to be pushed together in the case of a large party. On this wall you will also find two more flat screen television sets located between the windows. As you first walk into the restaurant you will see a small bench to your right for patrons waiting to be seated. To the left of the bench is a wall which is painted in chalkboard paint and displays all the specials for the day. Just beyond the specials wall are double doors, which lead to another room of seating and dinning. This room is intended for those looking to dine in a quieter setting. This room can also be reserved for larger parties looking to close the doors for more privacy. In the room there is an additional server station, which holds, ice, glasses, straws, silverware, and condiments. There is also an additional fountain soda hook up making waiting on tables in this room much more convenient for the wait staff. Behind the bar and in three locations throughout the restaurant you will find POS stations, which are directly linked to both the bar and kitchen, in an effort to get orders in as quickly and organized as possible. Besides the main entrance there are also two more exits reserved for emergencies only. Photography by local artists displayed around restaurant
