What we're looking for

As our Physical Design + Fabrication intern, you are passionate about technology-embedded installations, digital fabrication techniques, parametric design and exploring new technologies in fabrication.

Many VVOX projects merge digital media with physical construction to create totally immersive experiences. Our physical processes combine computational design and robotic fabrication with traditional tools and techniques to create challenging structures, often curvaceously organic or ultra-faceted.

Flexibility and the willingness to learn are the most important things in this role. There will be a mix of hands-on mentorship, but also quite a bit of self-directed work where we will expect you to figure things out on your own. You will be expected to be able to pick up new technologies and work your way through complex tasks independently.

Your daily tasks might include

• Working with a variety of materials, such as plastic, wood, metal, etc.
• Interfacing with digital fabrication technology like CNC routing, laser cutting, and 3D printing
• Getting hands-on in the Physical Computing lab where you might do things like wiring, soldering, assembly, PCB assembly, and LED configuration.
• Learning about and experimenting with our 8-Axis KUKA Robot arm setup
• Keeping the work area organized and clean
• Finding creative solutions during the process

Qualified candidates should have

• Basic fabrication shop skills (hand tools, power tools, finishing techniques, etc.)
• Basic digital fabrication knowledge (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, etc.)
• Knowledge of Rhino 3D. Grasshopper and RhinoCam/Powermill will be a plus
• Willingness to get your hands (and clothes) dirty
• Motivation and the initiative to create and make things
• Working as a team

Volvox Labs is a new media art studio.

Driven by nature, we seamlessly fuse the digital and physical to create work that moves, inspires, and elevates the human experience.

Our team is made up of a collective of different media artists and designers - specialized in creating high end CG and real-time content for non-standard displays, composing original music and sonic identities, as well as designing and engineering complex physical installations.

All positions at Volvox Labs are in-person, working out of our studio in the lovely neighborhood of Greenpoint in Brooklyn NY.

Currently, all positions are freelance contract-based positions.
