Bowerbird Architects is a small, Brooklyn based, custom residential and small retail firm. You will participate in all phases of the project from schematic design, through construction documents and construction administration. Unlike most, our office is very collaborative and non-hierarchical, and your creativity and input will be greatly relied upon and valued. You will make numerous contributions in design, so your aesthetic should be sympathetic with what you see on our website.

You will be expected to work on many forms of residential architecture, offices, and retail, from renovations to additions, and new, ground-up buildings. You will meet directly with clients, and eventually be in charge of running projects from start to finish yourself, so you should have excellent abilities to articulate ideas and organize complex projects.

If chosen for an interview, please be prepared to show working drawing sets you’ve put together in addition to your portfolio, and any if possible, photos of construction you oversaw. Additionally, think of architects and projects that have moved you over the years and be prepared to send links to photos of them, and details within them, and to discuss what aspects of these projects intrigue and inspire you during the interview.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • BArch or MArch required, and 3-6 years minimum office experience.
  • Ability to produce a complete set of construction documents
  • AutoCAD drafting experience mandatory, Revit a plus
  • Adobe Graphic Design skills (proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe In Design and Adobe Illustrator preferred)
  • 3D Modeling and Rendering (Sketchup, Vray for Sketchup) is preferred. The ability to hand sketch or paint will also be greatly valued.
  • Ability to learn and work quickly, but carefully, look things up, and use all resources available to solve problems.
  • Strong and clear communication and organizational skills a must
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from supervisor, but also able to take initiative.
  • Min 3 years of experience on NYC projects, preferably residential, in all phases from NYC DoB Code and Zoning research, schematic design, DOB/Landmarks filing, through construction administration
  • Experience with technical detailing along with the capability of researching facade, materials, interior fixtures, and appliances, etc. and filing out architectural schedules.
  • Capable of managing a group of architects/designers, leading client communication and design progress.
  • Capable of managing contractors.


Additional Skills:

  • Furniture, cabinet-making, and landscape design experience a plus.
  • Experience with FF+E, and organizing product specifications is a plus.
  • Building study models in creative and explanatory ways.
  • Candidates must be currently located in the New York City area and have valid work status in the US. Proximity of residence to Park Slope a plus, as is owning a bike or using Citibike to get to site visits.
