Valencia Parque Central

This 66-hectare site in the centre of Spain’s third largest city was created by the relocation of high speed trains into underground tunnels. Made possible following an investment of 73 million Euros, it is Valencia’s most significant redevelopment to date.

The landscape concept of the 23-hectare public park, Aigua plena de seny, ‘water full of wisdom,’ is based on a poem by Valencian writer Ausiàs March. The design celebrates the landscape and culture of the region, building on Valencia’s unique position as a major trading and cultural centre in European history.

Inspired by the local tradition of ceramics, the idea of the ‘bowl’ provides a unifying gesture, with water its overarching theme. Sculptured landform, plants and existing buildings create individual bowls, each with a unique programme and design.
