Hey Hey Canteen is an Asian comfort food restaurant located in Gowanus. The renovation aimed to create a space that was consistent with the food -- natural, textured, and delightful.

The color palette was kept black and white to provide visual emphasis on the energy created by the customers, with shots of green to echo the natural plantings. 

The existing space had rough brick walls and smooth concrete floors. The design maintains those textures and adds wood with three different treatments– solid natural white oak tables, ebony stained seating benches/serving counters and white stained ceiling boards. 

A black rope installation zipping around the room animates the space as the only source of decoration. Inexpensive fluorescent strip lights are installed on a diagonal through the space and covered with a gel that modulates the light.
