For those that are working in traditional Architecture, I'm interested in how many are working on reduced pay, reduced hours or both. There are reports all over the place of unemployment in the field, but I think underemployment is shockingly high, i.e. I don't know anybody working without at least a pay cut.
unemployed 21/56 = 37.5%... almost 4 out of 10 architects are unemployed. These statistics also include those that are working part-time or chose to work in another field.
Yes. Laid off in 10/08 from large firm I had been at for three years. Found a new gig at a medium sized firm doing very interesting work in 12/08 (two months later, I was very lucky). Still there *knock on wood.)
But getting by teaching English in Madrid. I feel quite lucky actually, with the same income as my architecture peers. I'm still entering competitions and improving my portfolio. I'm also looking into a masters at the ETSAM for the fall. Oh, and I speak Spanish fluently now and live with my cute Spanish girlfriend. Yay crisis.
No. I have been marketing my Revit Family making skills for the manufacturing industry for the past two years and am currently working part time for a couple of US owned light companies. That said I believe the building products industry has severely eroded away. Hundreds of US owned companies have been snatched up by foreign investors and while hundreds have gone out of business. The current economy is the largest redistribution of wealth in history. We will not see another building boom for at least another decade. There are simply too many architects and not enough projects. Maybe we should form a union. The AIA is a joke!
two people said "no" although they stated that they were 1) teaching english, and 2) making revit families.
I'm the official tallier! I think it stands correct that 35% is the unemployment rate for architects... 3.6 times larger than the national average of 9.7%.
I'm thinking we need 100 people... so we need 38 more respondents. Also, to clarify my last post above, those that said "no" but were working in another field, I tallied under "yes".
Just got hired will start work at the end of the month. Was unemployed since 07/09. The new place is not exciting but will get get me through till next year. I was told by up management of Shalom, that hiring will start at around June. So keep your chins up and remember do not work OT for free. I have send out resume to firms that I would like to work for and with so you should all do the same.
No, I read an article on the WSJ (AIA data) putting the layoffs at architecture firms at 40K last year, therefore I'm betting unemployment for architects is around +40% across the board.
Are You Employed?
