I started out in engineering school. Although even then I had the intention of persuing an M.arch after the b.sc eng.
It seemed like a good idea at the time (and part of me would still like to delve more into the structure and construction side of things), except that eng. school was increadibly stifling and sucked the life out of me, exactly at a time when I really just wanted to do something different, explore, and open up my creative/inquisitive side.
Other than that, nothing really. When I was younger, I wanted to be a Canadian forces pilot. But my vulnerability to motion-sickness and the 1999 NATO bombardment of Kosovo conspired against that idea. At 12 years old, I realized that being in any way responsible for killing people was not somthing I was really interested in.
planned on being a welder or an electrician after h.s. then i received a few grants and scholarships to go to college...so i went.... should have re thought that decision back when i was 18.....
I started out in computer science and electrical engineering in undergrad before switching to architecture.
If "interaction design" existed back then, I might have gone into that or something very similar. still might, but I enjoy too much of the regular architecture work to completely change my career trajectory.
Until I was about 14y/o: Doctor (until I fainted watching a video of a face lift on a little girl who had down syndrome)
Until 17y/o: Musician (until I realized I was good but not good enough and didn't want to spend my life teaching music)
I actually picked up architecture on a whim. I took a placement test in elementary school to get into a "gifted" or accelerated program. The gifted teacher told my mother that I would be best suited as an architect or engineer. I laughed and told her that was never going to happen...
In high school I took an autocad class to try out "architecture" and liked it so I ended up going to school for it. When I got there (and realized it was very artistically based) I fell in love. Ever since then I've been in this love/hate relationship.
I wanted to be a fighter pilot, but I didn't want to join the military. Funny thing, in highschool I took an aptitude test and my top two career matches were test pilot and architect. I definately picked the option that is most hazardous to my health and sanity.
After doing my undergrad I considered going to school in Milan to study automotive design, but I realized that if I wanted to work in the US, I'd have to live in Detroit.
^^hey i just saw Food inc. saw the results of chicken science. grow them fatter and faster with antibiotics and whatever else. possibilities are scary. yum.
well, my dad was an astronaut, so i thought i'd go the other way, down under the water, marine biologist.
but then i couldn't dissect the fish, so i turned to underwater photography.
but my camera wasn't water proof.
so i went back to the legos and found the architecture.
but then i hung off a couple buildings and realized the world was all about the landscape, not the objects in it...
but i'm unemployed now, so i could go back to any of the aforementioned careers choices, except for space exploration.
that's not for me.
what were your other potential career paths

If you think the hours and pay suck in architecture, give this one a shot for four years.
