Specialist or Generalist?

David Brown

As this economy (slowly) starts to get on it feet I have noticed an interesting trend. The firms that are hiring are looking for very specific backgrounds, say only Healthcare.

My questions is this? Has this recession transformed the industry? We will see a more specialized architectural profession in the future or is this specialization an opportunistic result of a down economy?

my guess is oportunistic - interesting though that most "specialists" i know got laid off - so I'd say generalist is a strong long term position... - firms are waiting for the golden child to beg them for a job and ask for nothing in return -
