concrete flat slab floor

jlxarchitect

For concrete flat slab floor, do I need to set a very regit structure grid to support this kind of floor? In Frank Gehry's design, he used flat slab all the time, like MIT building he just did. He used randomly positioned concrete column to support them. I think I can do the same way, can't I?

yes, but it will be expensive and waste a lot of concrete. Neither of which is a problem if you are doing a project in school, both major issues if you are actually going to build the thing. Basically, you have ot size the slab for the greatest span, which means there will be a great deal of unused capacity over shorter column spacings.
