probably depends on state - in CA it seems to be that you can still collect from CA even if you are no longer living there. i think you have to file in the state you were working in, bexause that is where your company would have paid into the unemployment insurance.
Make is correct... You collect unemployment from the state in which you worked for the past 18 months.
I was in a similar situation in 2003... Lived in Philadelphia, most recent job had been across the river in New Jersey, but had lived and worked in Chicago the year before. After several weeks of red tape hell among three state unemployment agencies (and after sorting out the fact that my NJ employer had never bothered reporting my income to the state), I finally began receiving unemployment benefits from Illinois.
Be forewarned that it might take a while to sort out, and you should have pay stubs and/or W2 forms ready in case you need to verify your former employment and salary... Good news is, if there's a delay, your first check will be retroactive to the date you became unemployed.
working in 1 state but resident in another...then...
layed off....
is it still possible to collect un-employment.
Anything is possible. You may want to start by filing for umemployment in the state you reside in, see what they say. Good luck.
Aw crap, crizzler, you're kidding me.
Check out some other threads, I think early on in the layoffs thread someone posted about collecting unemployment from a different state.
i got a talk to today.... shit happens... we'll see if it really goes down though. i already told them i'm moving back to the D if it does happen.
sort of bad timing with alot of things that i have going on in may...we'll see.... i'm sure i can hustle in some work somewhere.

thanks... but i have only been employed since dec.08 so i think i'm screwed....
i'll see what happens....
Did you have a job elsewhere before December '08? If so, that will also be factored in.
If not, you might have a problem, but apply for benefits anyway. They'll take your info and tell you how much, if any, you are eligible for.
been self-employed for about 10 years...
