According to UCLA, I have 3 pre-req's to take before the Fall.

Okay...

I can enroll now, but I'm past the typical Spring semester dead-line.

If I enroll for the summer, I miss UCLA's jumpstart program and digital workshop (which while they don't REQUIRE... they HIGHLY RECOMMEND).

I can't take them while IN SCHOOL b/c of the aforementioned stipulation..

And I can't defer a year to take my pre-req's, b/c UCLA will rescind my offer and I'd have to start from scratch.

Why accept me in the first place if I'm gonna be sent on a fool's errand (to jeopardize the beginning of my UCLA education or derail it altogether)

i just called berkeley and no one is picking up the phones because they're on spring break this week. i need to know if my mama and sis can come to their open house event with me, or if it's just for students. i don't know why they want to come, but yeah... i'm a grown ass woman at the ripe age of 28 years old for crying out loud.

also, i need to know when fall semester starts. sometime in august i presume, but i need to know what day so i can freaking resign from work already.

the message did say to email if you have any questions, so i guess i'll try that. the open house is in exactly 2 weeks from today so i need to get my ticket, like yesterday.

i wonder if i'll even get a response. i'm not sure anyone's there.

lewisandclark_ schools usually allow you to take care of any missing pre-reqs while in the program. i think berkeley says theirs need to be done the summer after enrollment. is it a different case for ucla? sound really frustrating, but they wouldn't have accepted you if they didn't think the requirements could be resolved. weird.

lewisandclark - that sounds annoying. Have you tried talking to the coordinator of the program? I feel like that is probably the best person to get the real deal from.

jaded and joyful, I emailed one of the admissions staff for cooper union on March 12th and was told candidates should receive notice by mail within 2 weeks which means March 26th... hope this helps

Denied by Penn's M.ArchII (disappointing), but accepted to their Master of Urban Spatial Analytics Program (surprised ... flattered?). Their MUSA program sounds a lot like Columbia's MSAUD program.

Yeah... I just spoke with the Admissions Director at UCLA. These courses MUST be completed before Fall entry (no if's, and's or but's).

Don't get me wrong... THEY think it can be resolved with no problem. But from my vantage point - with the packing, moving from NYC to Cali, the 2 summer AUD courses and NOW 3 additional classes... I'm not as optimistic.

I'll see if I can speak with some of the students at the open house... maybe they'll know something the Admission's Director doesn't.

While the architecture degree is my first priority, I am certainly interested in urban planning and broader issues of sustainability, transit and growth patterns. In other words, I'm a bit conflicted. This is an interesting program, because it's new, small, and they include faculty with backgrounds in social sciences and economics. If I could defer and take this later, I might actually consider it. On the other hand, if there isn't studio work and it's just analyzing data in a classroom, this could be a bore and a tremendous waste of time.

I hear ya. Sounded REALLY interesting until you said there was no studio. I would try to figure out what is going to make you the best possible candidate for a job in 1 year. Do you have other options?

nicholasbailey_ i personally ♥ sci-arc. it has it's issues, take it or leave it. i only have experience as a summer student, so i'm not really sure about their m. arch program. i have friends who attend and most are happy there. the environment is really great. ultimately, i think it depends on what your goals are as well as what type of school you're looking for. sci-arc is about breeding a certain kind of architect who thinks a certain kind of way. it's really insteresting, through it can be pretentious as well. from my summer at sci-arc, they were definitely more about knowing the architectural language than say, berkeley. anyway, i'm rambling as usual. but what exactly did you want to know about the school?


lewisandclark_ do you have other choices or is ucla where you really want to go? if so, i'd say ditch the jump start program if it's not required and move out here and take the summer classes. but yeah, ask other students. there may be a loop hole of some sort... that sucks though! pretty unfair.

Well my main question was when might we hear about admission decisions... but if your interested in talking I can ask... I see my goal as an architecture grad being small firm while teaching at a school, does a degree from SCI-Arc offer the opportunities that others say UMich or UCLA might? think education, network, and name recognition.

Don't settle!! Penn is undoubtedly a great school. If studying architecture is indeed your first priority, then study architecture! I'm certain you've gotten some other amazing offers from world-class institutions that truly want you to become a part of their family rather than offering you an option that doesn't fit within your educational plan.

I actually don't know for sure whether it involves a studio or not. More research is definitely required. The upside is that it's a really small program, which is exciting, if only in principle.

right now, it looks like i'm headed to Columbia because i haven't heard from Harvard or UCLA yet. While I'm already in LA, Columbia just sounds more exciting despite the convenience, smaller size and amazing faculty at UCLA. Also, UCLA's advanced topics studio is accepting 13 people. I'm assuming 2-3 of those students are going to be from the US while the rest are from elsewhere. It probably doesn't help that I'm a white male who lives in the neighborhood.

if you see yourself working in los angeles or california, then yes, sci-arc and ucla would be good in terms of networking and what have you. umich has a good reputation as well, though i've never been there so i can't speak about the school itself. going to the mich open house on friday though... i'm always up for talking because i talk a lot. :O

ucla is probably more "practical" also costs a bit less than sci-arc. not sure if you're interested in any dual degrees, but what ucla can provide that sci-arc cannot is a dual degree since it's a university whereas sci-arc is strictly architecture. as far as decisions, i don't think it'll be till the end of the month or early april. sci-arc is one of the schools last to decide. what i love most about sci-arc is the building itself and the studios... very conducive to architecture with the industrial old train depot thing.

i would suggest a visit. some people who participated in the summer program were turned off by the school and felt the overall student work to be "underwhelming." there's a sick view of the buildings in downtown la from the woodshop though. hmm... i wish there were a way to figure out what students fit best where based on goals, personality, etc... ultimately, i think you have to feel it out if you get a chance to visit. oh yeah, if you have a dog, you'll love sci-arc. it's very dog friendly and students bring their dogs to studio...so that's a + for those who have dogs and are dog lovers. oh yeah, and very cali... skate boarding inside, etc... the school is about half a mile long.

My Wife and I are going to the open house too I guess we shall see you there! Have you heard from them what the housing arrangments are? they said they would house us on thursday night but we dont even know where to go...

If I get into SCI-Arc a visit will deff be in order.

I have no idea what to do. UPenn wants me to take arch history, calculus and physics BEFORE I register. I'm taking calc and physics right now, but how can I take arch history while I'm doing their required summer program? And I have no idea how much it's going to cost. I guess I'm a little Ivy-struck. I'm sure I'll get over it soon.

nicholasbailey_ in that case, go with sci-arc. you'll see the difference. i've been to ucla's open house twice...once in 2207 and then again in 2008. actually, i just remembered how much i liked greg lynn. ucla does have some amazing faculty. are you choosing between umich, ucla and sci-arc? weren't you accepted to mit?

i keep trying to get my partner to help me decide on schools. been with the fool for over 9 years and he's all " you have to make the choice youself. what i think shouldn't matter." truthfully, he's originally from detroit, so i'm sure he was rooting for u of mich in ann arbor. but with berkeley's offer he also understands the opportunity there.

i'm going to start another thread tonight for peeps to post their final results and decisions. i think that would be an amazing resource for this year's applicants and possibly future generations of applicants. i shouldn't be soo hasty about deciding, but i think berkeley's won me over.

Everyone applying for Post-Professional education and planning on becoming a licensed architect should read this.

You can get 936 training hours under IDP if you attend on of these programs. This is basically 1/6th of your required IDP (1/2 year working time). This is not applicable at all schools.

they've asked me to fulfill a bunch of pre-req's aswell but i think i can convince them i already have for most of them... other then physics... which i'm going to try and get them to qualify a Canadian high school physics course as it provides all the necessary knowledge... and is accepted by CDN schools .... anyways...

i'm surprised how blinded by prestige some people here are. your first priority should be how cheaply you can get your degree. none of these schools are the university of phoenix. wherever you go you WILL get a good education if you WANT it. most of us aren't going to make much $$ with this degree, at least for a while anyway (if at all). do yourselves a favor and avoid debt as much as possible.

prestigious degrees open some doors, true, but they close some as well. there are employers out there who will see your degree and automatically dismiss you as a lofty pretentious douche lacking pragmatic skills. whether it's their own insecurity or because it's true, you are still boxing yourself into a certain "class" of people.

consider the guy with the university of phoenix degree. if his portfolio is better than yours and he has a practical skill set, the fact that you went to a brand name school now means squat.

@e4d1c - yes, PennDesign has a summer studio. It's at $9,500.

Just got home after being out of the country for the last week and a half to find a big fatty UW envelope! That was the last school I was waiting to hear from (besides safeties I don't need to settle for), so I'm on to visiting and decision time. Yay! It's exciting to be moving along through the process.
