AAbelSun, same here. Rejection from Yale too. There goes my $85.
May you get good news from the remaining 3 schools ! : )

For those who have been accepted, this is what mr sanders said

"....The Admissions Committee of the School of Architecture has concluded its meetings and I regret to inform you that we are not able to offer you admission to next year’s class. As there were many more applicants than available spaces, many promising candidates simply could not be accepted.

We do, however, appreciate your interest in our program and recognize that you put a great deal of time and effort into the admissions process. We wish you the very best in the development of your professional career.

Thank you again for your application."

Sincerely,

Joel Sanders
Chair, Admissions Committee

****************

I always wonder if the adcomm can do more than just send out a generic rejection letter/email to applicants. Aint it better if they could just give some constructive feedback on our apps? After all, applicants spent so much time, effort and $ to apply to the school. It wont hurt to reciprocate with some feedback.

Can someone post the contents of their acceptance letters? It wouldnt make a difference to my status, but it may provide some impetus for me to push on for a re-application next fall....2011 (!!!!) Thanks man.

Here you go Pythagoras,

March 9, 2010

Mr. Pult.
This is a copy of the letter that you will be receiving by mail shortly.

Congratulations on your admission to Yale School of Architecture, Class of 2013. You have every reason to feel proud of your accomplishments and we look forward to having you here in New Haven next year as a first year student in our M.Arch. I program. It is our mission to educate architects who are thinkers and makers – architects who will lead the profession in the years to come. Our School’s special assets are many, none more valuable than the students who elect to study here—who choose Yale as a community of highly qualified creative individuals. We hope you will become part of our community.

I am sure that you have many questions about the School and your place in it. Soon, you will hear from Joel Sanders, Chair of Admissions, who will supply the details of your admission, but I would like to highlight a few things that may be of particular interest. The open, interactive nature of our classrooms, studios and lecture programs, enables the widest possible exchange of ideas. Our world-class faculty, which includes Fred Koetter, Alan Plattus, Keller Easterling, Peggy Deamer, Peter Eisenman, Dolores Hayden, Michelle Addington, Kurt Forster, Joel Sanders, Mark Gage, Hilary Sample and Emmanuel Petit to name but a few, is complemented by an unmatched roster of renowned architects , historians and theorists, as well as professionals and scholars from allied fields who visit our School each semester. The expected roster of next year’s visitors offering studios and classes includes architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Massimo Scolari, Brigitte Shim, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, John Patkau and Demetri Porphyrios, and historians Stanislaus von Moos and Mario Carpo.

Our core curriculum combines academic and studio work with a unique experience in the field: the Vlock First Year Building Project, which enables the entire class, working in consultation with faculty and community clients, to participate in the design and construction of an affordable house. The core studio sequence is complemented by courses in history, theory, urban development, materials and building technology as well as courses in graphic representation that range from hand drawing to work in digital media.

We also take great pride in our digital labs incorporating the most advanced equipment available including a 7-axis robotic arm, four CNC mills, a multi-axis foam cutter, two 3-D plastic printers, a 3-D powder based printer, two 3-D laser scanner, six laser cutters, a 2-D plasma cutter, and a waterjet cutter will enable you to explore the widest range of fabrication techniques.

The enclosed copy of the most recent Retrospecta, should help to further convey a sense of the diversity and vitality of our school. But even better, I urge you to directly experience our school by coming to New Haven for the School’s Open House on 8 April when students and faculty will be here to answer your questions and you will have an opportunity to visit classes, studios, laboratories and fabrication facilities. A highlight of your day in New Haven will be our current exhibition, “Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future”, concluding its world tour at Yale and an opportunity to attend one of our evening public lectures, delivered by Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor, Frank Gehry.

I look forward to meeting you in New Haven on 8 April and am delighted by the prospect of your joining us in New Haven next fall. Welcome to Yale.

Sincerely,

Robert A.M. Stern
Dean
J.M. Hoppin Professor of Architecture

I think we had a discussion on if schools should include feedback or whatever a few pages back.

I've only heard from ASU so far, but here is a snip from the admissions letter:

"From all indications it appears we will have an outstanding entering class. The new students have exceptionally good undergraduate records and represent fine universities throughout the world."

The rest was blah blah open house this blah blah forms that blah blah

yeah, it does seem strange to mention that stuff in the admit letter, but i get why they did it. when you see that stuff during the open house, it's super impressive. being familiar with only the facilities at columbia and penn, yale's stuff is impressive. at penn my boyfriend would be up all night waiting for his number to be up on the laser cutter queue. it's very comforting to know that i won't have to wait in line for hours the night before a review because there's only one laser cutter for the whole department.

i noticed a typo in the yale admit letter:

"two 3-D laser scanner,"

should be "scanners"

my undergrad alma mater just got one laser cutter this past school year. and i am pretty certain it was paid for and donated by one of the student organizations, just like the drum scanner was a few years ago.

i would weep at the site of yale's equipment room.

so anybody up for starting the 2011 m.arch applicants thread now? :)

I applied to 5 schools and got my rejection letter from Princeton this morning... so I'm waiting to try again next year. but for anybody who gets the acceptance package from Michigan, I was excited to find my own student publication wrapped in the tshirt! (currently in UM's undergrad program) that's our very first issue! what was creepy was that UM got my shirt size correct (size small)!

Mar 11, 10 9:48 am  ·

wait wait wait... michigan is giving us a shirt?? sold.

Mar 11, 10 9:54 am  ·

okay this is sort of not really off topic... but my biggest concern with moving to arizona for grad school is the possibility of a coyote eating my cat. i don't even know if there are a lot around there.
maybe i'm just going stir crazy with all this waiting for the rest of the schools' decisions

I find it funny that Yale lists facts in their letter that all the applicants should know by now anyway...

sounds like that cat is holding you down man... kiss goodbye to mr. mittens and move on

Mar 11, 10 10:02 am  ·

mycatlikesMies

haha yes, and they got my shirt size correct. I went to Michigan for undergrad, so the creepy factor in how well they know their students has lessened over the years. One year, I went to Naples, Fl for spring break because my bf's parents have a house there. Just went to visit, for a week. I never signed anything or let anybody (except via my status on facebook) know I was there. Two weeks later, I get a letter from the University of Michigan Alumni Association NAPLES DIVISION asking me for money. That was by far the creepiest.

Officially rejected from Yale, which was assumed at this point anyways. Still waiting for MIT and WUSTL to tell me already!

If there is anyone who got an acceptance letter in the mail from WUSTL but didn't get the corresponding email yesterday, feel free to chime in and give me one last hope that the letter is on its way. Otherwise, I'm taking it as another assumed rejection.

UT Austin is looking better and better. And cheaper than those other schools anyways!

finally entering the thread...

my latest rejection pushed me to action. I'm an MArchII/post pro applicant with a 5year Bof Arch degree. i have a great job but grad school was always the plan. the way things are looking- might be the plan for next year or the year after that:

yale- rejection (got the email as i sat down at my desk today, surrounded by yale graduates btw)
mit-?
columbia- rejection
ut austin-? (has any MArchII applicants heard from UT?)
gsd-? assume no

thanks for the commentary everyone- its been really helpful to have people going thru the same ups and downs as me. good luck to all.

MarchII app

I haven't heard from UT yet either. Got rejected from GSAPP. Still waiting on Rice, UT, and the GSD. Hopefully, we'll hear something from UT today or tomorrow.

Hang in there!

Lidandan:
Where did you go to school?

I'm actually really pumped about WUSTL - they have by far the best options for international study and I think Bruce Lindsey gives the perfect balance for a Dean - cutting edge but at the same time a very hands on approach from his years as dean at Auburn. The one thing that tuns me off about Wash U is its location - far away from people I care about, and no proximity to ocean or skiing.
I'm excited to go to the open house weekend and get a better taste of St Louis, not excited to think about how am going to pay 20k a semester to afford it! [Hoping for a big scholarship and aid package in the mail!]

ADavin, and anyone else going to the WUSTL open house: Go to the City Museum, if you possibly have time. It is open late on Friday and Saturday nights, and they have a bar AND all kinds of crazy structures you can climb around in. I think I would probably be willing to live in St. Louis just to live near the City Museum.
