Thanks for that pick me up. Rejection hurts, especially in the profession you're in and invested time in. I wish I could be objective and look ahead... today is not that day, maybe next week or the week after, but not today.
Alonso978
Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. I know what you're going through, man; guess we're in the same boat. Hang in there; it's not over until admissions season is over. I'm sure you'll get in.
Those who got into grad school
Congrats!!! Enjoy the weekend!!!
This year is BY FAR the most competitive year ever to get into school for a MArch degree. Sayfties have become reaches, and reaches have become stretches, and stretches have become pure toss ups (unless you are melany or RazVan). The competition is fierce as f**k. I heard princeton had over 700 applicants for 40 spots. And you know the no schmuck is applying to princeton. or any ivy for that matter.
Rejection hurts. Hell yeah it does. I had crazy Ivy League dreams this whole past year. I was cocky as hell about it. I'm sure most of us were going into it (those going in for the first time at least). All my professors said I had a solid shot. I still think I do. . I am positive I can excel at any of these schools. I know my work is just as strong as anyone else here. But just because I didn't get in (and the large majority aren't getting in) doesnt mean its the end of the world.
I've still got my head high. Still got my fingers crossed. It has been a humbling experience for sure, but it has taught me a lot.
I am still waiting for MSAUD.. just really curious if any of you out there even received an acceptance from MSAUD at all? Is it now fair to assume that I am either rejected or wait-listed if I didn't hear anything from them? This is really nerve wrecking..
there aren't as many gsapp acceptances on grad cafe as last year. maybe there is still hope for those of us dealing with silence from columbia (and austin)
"To UT Austin applicants who STILL haven't heard: Decisions are still being made, and they're drawing out the process until.. gasp... NEXT week. My application went in late, so I might be being punished."
ADavin > There were many things about your post that i couldn't have said better.
indeed the entire application to Ivies is a gamble, a crap shoot, rolling the dice. I am more than certain that most people on this blog have sensitively similar work, graphic skills, formal skills, design capabilities and variety of experience.
I cannot even speculate on what makes the difference. a coherent personal statement? the underlying message of the portfolio that besides being a thorough and elegant documentation of one's work, also conveys the personality of the applicant. and how this specific personality appeals or seems suitable based on what each school is looking for. hard to say.
it's been a nerve wrecking week. and in or out, i am convinced many of us learned from this experience equally much.
there are still schools left to answer, so good luck y'all.
I'm in the same boat. Have received nothing but solid rejections all this week. I got in to UIC, but am not sure if I'm keen to attend the program. I really have a dream to attend a school like UCLA or SCI-Arc, and so if they also reject me, I'm seriously planning to just reapply next year. It sucks to know that I'll be a year older, but I'm coming around to the idea that it's better to have started a year later than to be stuck in a program for 3 years that you didn't like.
It's been very helpful to look at people's portfolios. It's certainly given me ideas on how to improve mine.
My question is: how can we start planning and improve our chances for next year? I have a non-arch background, and my undergrad gpa sucks. I took some art classes at a design school for two semesters after graduating from college, and did UCLA's summer program, but apparently this isn't enough. Someone advised me that I should try to take grad level classes somewhere to beef up my transcript. What do you guys think? Does anyone know if a school like UCLA will allow continuing ed students to take grad level architecture classes? Or should I attend UIC for a year while attempting to reapply to other MArch programs? I know the courses probably won't transfer over if I'm admitted to another school, but at the very least it can prove that I have the ability to handle grad level design studios. Does a grad prep program like LAIAD have any street cred?
Any suggestions you guys can offer on this, particularly from the folks who have gone through a similar ordeal, would really be appreciated.
Hi all,
I'm still waiting to hear from UT Austin or should i expect another rejection?
Perhaps I should have applied more safety schools rather than trying my luck against big name schools..
Here's my stat so far,
Yale - rejected...again...
Princeton - rejected.. again but expected...
GSD -- not yet...
UT Austin --- probably not...
Berkeley ---not yet.
U of Washington ---not yet.
Just received my acceptance to SoA @ UIUC via email. . .very subdued letter, no financial aid info or indication as to when said info will be provided. Graduate College will not send official letter of admission until I accept the offer. Is this typical?
Any rate, relieved to have my first acceptance. 1.5/5:
UIUC - in
UMich - waitilisted, 2G
IIT - no response
UIC - no response
GSD - no response
that seems strange illi. maybe they don't want to waste time if you aren't even going to go there..
but still it's weird to not get an official letter until you accept.
probably not many of you, but anyone waiting for a UIUC decision.. they are out according to my friend who applied.
btw, I am beyond happy for all of you who were admitted to GSAPP... after the week of rejections it's so amazing to hear the great news... especially TheVillian... fantastic.
i didn't get a "news and event" e-mail either...i guess that means i'm toast at gsd. or the person who was in charge of our accounts took off at the end of the day and forgot to send it.
found out that U Miami (Fla) should be sending out its letters within the next week.
in at u of i (UIUC) ! Also, was waitlisted at Michigan 3 days ago, just got an email saying to check my status and that an official letter would be sent to me, but checked and still waitlisted, wierd!? For a minute I thought I was in, anyone else waitlisted at UMich get this email?
I got the same email from TCAUP, a.sorell. Also checked my application status again out of curiosity and still on the dreaded waitlist.
Congrats on UIUC! Did your letter contain any sort of financial info, or the bizarre "final admission contingent upon the approval of the Graduate College" verbiage?
Wish the old alma mater were a little more upbeat with their acceptance letter.
I wouldn't necessarily say that no news is bad news for UT guys...at least, not yet :| ...however, a classmate of mine got her UT acceptance on the website yesterday...don't know what that means yet
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!
Greg

Congrats!!! Enjoy the weekend!!!
2.5 hrs remaining b4 GSAPP closes for Spring Break :-(
How many of us are still waiting ?
I'm still waiting on GSAPP
me too! heard nuthin yet from GSAPP (MSAUD)!
do they even let us know if we are wait listed?
someone at grad cafe... posted a rejection from Cornell - M.Arch !
& i thought the terror week was about to end :(
Cornell U - via post (as on grad cafe)
& i've heard that GSD & Cornell both believe the 'wait for mail - kill way !'
i'm still waiting on GSAPP :(
I got my UBC package in the postal mail. (expedited)
Another thing everyone needs to remember:

Sorry that turned into a serious ramble.

It doesn't seem that columbia has sent out any msaud decisions yet...no news is good news... i hope!
...its spring break for UT Austin in a few hours too....
Good to know that GSAPP hasnt sent out the MSAUD decisions yet! Lets gear up for some post spring action!!
ahhh damn it UT...i'm going to have an anxiety attack before the month is out
yeah im still waiting to hear from UT as well. Im assuming at this point that its a rejection or wait listed.
Wait-LISTEd ... No word from CUNY yet. I believe the just started review.
like i said, i am still interested to find out if anyone has already received an acceptance for MSAUD..
paupaul,
I would assume the silence means no. And there haven't been any postings on gradcafe either.
thanks, mugged. it's just.. my anxiety talking.. :)
Anyone else hear from UT today? They go on spring break as well.
So frustrated.
paupaul,
trust me I completely understand, Im still waiting on responses from 6 other schools. I figured any answer is better then none at all.
Sonali,
No, no response from UT yet. Ive checked my status online a couple times this week and there has been no change.
there aren't as many gsapp acceptances on grad cafe as last year. maybe there is still hope for those of us dealing with silence from columbia (and austin)
Just posted to grad cafe
"To UT Austin applicants who STILL haven't heard: Decisions are still being made, and they're drawing out the process until.. gasp... NEXT week. My application went in late, so I might be being punished."
Do not send me a "News + Events at Harvard GSD: March 15-18" email, GSD.
For those wondering about GSAPP class sizes, I'm in the 1st year of the MArch class now and there are about 90 of us.
Just saw the gradcafe post...yikes! Another torturous weekend.
Jhooper,
Do you how many for MSAUD?

Hope for the best!
C'mon PRATT!!!!!! Let's get those emails going!!!!!
BigRed, I have been on the list from before I applied, so it's not any kind of indicator.

Holy crap, Stasis. I love those colors in your portfolio. But then again my room looks like a rainbow vomited, so i'm a big fan of colors. :)
Atty, did you get anything else from Parsons? i remember you saying you hadn't received anything official yet.
I havent seen it yet but apparently I have something waiting for me at home.

in at u of i (UIUC) ! Also, was waitlisted at Michigan 3 days ago, just got an email saying to check my status and that an official letter would be sent to me, but checked and still waitlisted, wierd!? For a minute I thought I was in, anyone else waitlisted at UMich get this email?
