@cew - i don't think you're analysis for top tier graduate programs is correct... as much as i'd like to believe it is

my best friend graduated from yale last year, my other best friend is a 3rd year now and five of my close friends are 2nd years... and they all say the same thing:

it's completely different than undergrad because everybody in the program is top tier and is wildly competitive... as opposed to in undergrad where the majority of kids were average at best, and the rest were terrible and didn't want to be architects.

ie: it appears the top tier schools really do want "whiz-kid over-achievers"

I still haven't heard anything from GSAPP either... But then, I didn't apply there, so I'm not expecting to hear from them.

Out of pure boredom I uploaded the final version of my portfolio onto the webs. It's so weird to see something you haven't seen in months. It just looks so alien. Well here it is.

Like so many others, long time lurker, first time poster.

Application Status: 0.5/5

Michigan (2G) - wait listed as of 03.10.2010

IIT - no response
UIC - no response

Both of these schools have started notifying, so I'm assuming I didn't make the first round.

GSD - no response
UIUC - no response

Haven't seen any rumblings yet concerning these last two on the cafe or elsewhere, although Chambana had stated they should be notifying "early March" in previous emails.

---

In application-related news, have any fellow IIT applicants had trouble accessing their application status online? I have NEVER been able to login, though I received the requisite confirmation email with login information from admissions back in January. I have repeatedly emailed them at the address they provided to let them know about the problem, but haven't had any response.

Adding to the situation, I received an email from IIT Architecture Admissions two weeks ago (02.25) saying my application was incomplete; responded immediately only to learn that they were missing all but one of my LoR. All of my recs had been submitted by early January; I kindly and calmly told them this. It turns out that Graduate Admissions had them on file all along but never transmitted them to Arch. Admissions; fortunately, this was resolved by the next day. However, because it was considered incomplete up until then, my application had not yet been reviewed.

As for the wait list situation at Michigan--should I be fortunate enough to be admitted at a later time--is it safe to assume that I shouldn't expect any sort of merit-based financial assistance from the school, i.e. assistantships, grants, etc.? Unfortunately, loans alone aren't going to cut it for me, especially if attending an expensive private or out-of-state school.

Congratulations to all those accepted, and bon courage to all those still waiting!

illi-

I am a fellow IIT applicant who has not heard anything yet. Although I have never had trouble logging in, I checked my status after your post and it still said "application complete", nothing about acceptance or rejection. I did, however, get an e-mail stating that they "will be sending admission notifications via email by March 15th." So, either way, we should know by Monday at the latest.

Best of luck to you!

illi - I was wait listed at UMich too today, and also waiting to hear from Chambana. With the screen name illi I assume you're from UIUC. I just graduated from there last May.

In at UIC and IIT heard back from UIC in late Feb and IIT in early March.

Good luck and I hope you get word soon!

lol. just woke up in the middle of the night to check my e-mail again.

still no dice. Yale broke the silence with good news on Monday, and nothing since. and there I was thinking ivies had this "pact" of letting people know around the same date.

i guess "around" spans a week ...

anyhow, on the EMMARCH 13: dude/dudette this ain't funny. but thanks for the update nonetheless.

it's funny to think that some of us on this forum will actually end up being classmates. and that i'm the only sucker using his real name in a world of avatars.

anyhow. hang in there. second wave of e-mail should strike tomorrow (my prediction)

cheers.

hello all,

actually emmarch may be right. A couple of my friends from college got into the GSAAP MArch program yesterday.

They may be slowly notifying all the accepted now...

Didn't apply there, but still waiting on more schools

PIXELWHORE!!!

Hey, someone with knowledge of the inner workings of the machine! By your profile, I'm guessing you work at MIT?

Can you share with us a summary of the admissions process? I think it might alleviate some fears that it can be a relatively arbitrary process. It would be very helpful.

For example:
- What are the relative weights of different components - portfolio, statement, letters, GRE, GPA, diversity, etc.? I'm guessing portfolio comes first, but what about the rest?
- How do you assess the content in a portfolio? How much weight do factors such as aesthetics, creativity, architectural experience, etc. have?
- What process do you use to assess the overall quality of an applicant? Do you "grade" each component of the application (e.g. portfolio, statement, GRE, etc.) and then determine whether or not an applicant is in based on their final "grade"?
- How do you go about sorting the applications? Do you look through them alphabetically, randomly, or by date submitted? Do you look at the entire application at once, or at bits and pieces of a given application at different times?
- How many stages are there to assessing an applicant? Do you look at an application once and say "s/he's in" or "s/he's out", or do you sort out a list of stronger applicants first and then determine who to accept from those?

Any information would be awesome! Thanks for stopping by.

Maybe I'm just a little too credulous, but I kinda gave people the benefit of the doubt re: their 'updates'. Maybe melany and emmarch13 are both suffering from a lack of um... appropriate self-expression? People can come off in text completely different from what they'd intended... isn't like 70% of communication about verbal/facial cues?

That said, I fall into the pit of current GSAPP non-contactees and am just wondering what the hell is going on! Wah!!

I haven't heard either. Hang in there, they are probably getting some more Starbucks right now.

Laughed myself silly at your school assessment btw. They weren't too far off the mark from personal impressions!

Are you going to be at the Yale open house? It looks like they're putting on a good show... and my biased MIT friend says "you really gotta see how shitty New Haven is firsthand to let it make up your mind for you." :p well, it might encourage me to work a little harder indoors!

Hi all,
This is my second year applying to M.Arch I program after the debacle last year.

I haven't yet heard from Yale yet, and so it seems that they'll reject me again. well, I learned that I gave Yale non-working e-mail address, but I don't have much hope in my chance.

For those who are waiting to hear from Yale, they will update your application status by next week, 3/16, so you can check whether you're rejected or not.
As for other schools...

GSD-->I received the rejection letter around 2nd week of April and
Princeton --> probably lightyear long shot. i got rejected on 3/17
UT Austin --> I haven't heard from them yet, so i guess i am...
U of Washington --> does anyone know when they send out notices?
Berkeley --> I got my rejection letter on 3/24 via e-mail, but i know they send out decisions by the week before, hence acceptees will hear from them next week or so. btw, Berkeley will now add $5k/year for PDF on the top of the tuition.

hope this helps and good luck to you all.

aguacate,
my former boss told me that New Haven's full of mobs...
i don't mean thugs. hardcore mafia mobs... maybe he is as biased as your MIT buddies. Nonetheless, wouldn't this make you work harder indoors?

Greg.

Anyone with any inside scoop on when GSD is notifying? Are they notifying by email or just postal? I hope it's both this time.

Greg - i hope so too that it will be by email this time - saves time money and paper :)

Greg.

^ Well, they would probably still send the paper version (based on what they did in the past), so it wouldn't necessarily save paper or money, but I definitely agree about the time bit. Email usually arrives much faster than courier, and I am getting impatient for news from the schools I applied to. Just let me know my status already so I can MOVE ON WITH MY LIFE ... lol

No, I don't work at MIT - there are a lot of architecture schools in the greater Boston area!

Unfortunately I don't have the time to fully answer your questions right now, but when I do I will do my best to be as clear and concise with my answers as possible.

And New Haven isn't the nicest of cities. The Yale campus and its immediate surroundings are quite nice, but things can drop off outside of that. It is in no way a warzone, but if people are expecting a scenic Ivy-league campus as far as the eye can see they're in for a surprise.

The parties I attended on the architecture building roof on Fridays were a blast - those of you that have been accepted should feel free to invite me if they still do anything like that.

GSAPP rejected! on 3/9

Early rejections seem inconsistent and doesn't follow the established pattern. This engenders doubt. Anyone call and find out?/Anyone get a call?

sorry Waqas. that's true.

and yeah, trying to make it to the Y open house.

My undergrad thesis instructor actually graduated from Yale 2 years ago, and...oh well, he did not like "that" New Haven outside the 9 squares and pretty town, but his stories about life at yale, compared to stories of people going to...say gsd or gsapp were by far the BEST.

Pult > hope you're right..

at least Toronto's having a sunny day. makes waiting more bearable
