Headed across the pond for the first time in my existence. On tap are Dublin/Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam, in that order.
Experienced travelers of these fine cities, what are your recommendations for absolute must dos? (places not to be missed). I don't necessarily need a laundry list, just the most mandatory, non-obvious travel ideas.
In Amsterdam, rent a bike at the shop on the east end of the main train station then ride around to the north side of the train station. Take the free ferry (5 minutes) across the water to the new developed area. It is very beautiful, has plenty of bike paths, and loads of great architecture.
I personally, would be brief or even skip Brussels and take a 1 hr train ride west to Brugges. Amazingly preserved old town w/ canals - think Amsterdam without the crowds.
Is it a public bike share or rental? That was something I had in mind for Amsterdam and I think you've convinced me. I hear the Eastern Docklands neighborhood has some pretty stunning modern architecture, so perhaps we will take a pedal over there.
We are only going to Brussels to visit and stay with a family friend. We will probably do a day trip to Bruges, seek out some ancient Belgian pubs. Cheers!
