I am thinking of doing some freelance work that I got a referral
for but Ive never done anything freelance. What do I charge? I am
in northern NJ (30 min out of NYC).
One way would be to start with your desired salary and calculate an hourly rate based on that salary. For instance, $40k = roughly $19 an hour. The more conventional approach is to base your fee on a percentage of the construction cost, maybe in the 7% range if you're just starting out.
I don't know much about freelancing, but $40k = $19 an hour? Thats how it works out when you're working for an employer and he's paying benefits such as Health insurance and overhead. Plus the fact that you're not guaranteed 52 weeks of 40 hour weeks if you're freelancing - and therefore carry much more risk. The amount per hour has to be much higher when freelancing to equal someone getting paid $40k a year at a company.
Freelance fees????
