M.Arch II 2009 Applicants Commiserate here

cartagena7

I started this topic to talk about the application process to M.Arch II or post-professional programs in architecture. The majority of the posts in other discussions deal only with M. Arch I, so feel free to comment.

I applied to Berkeley, UCLA and Harvard. I have a deferred acceptance to Pratt but its quite expensive to go.

how does the defer process actually work? is it an option you are given?

Pratt had the option, most schools don't though. It was my insurance school and the only one I got into. But the financial aid wasn't enough, so I paid the deposit to defer my acceptance until fall 09. I can still go if I want but Im hoping for a UC since Im a CA resident.

I'm applying to a variety of post-professional programs. I made this decision less than a month ago, after getting laid off. I hope that I get in somewhere...

I decided to apply to MArch II after seven years working in the field as a consultant (nothing else to learn). Anyway, lay offs in my company already started and once my current project is over this year I may not have anything else to do here. I applied to:
GA Tech
Penn
GSD
Princeton
Columbia
Yale
...and I don't have a plan B.

quick question.. is it advisable to hand-deliver stuff (portfolio, etc) to the schools im applying to? since they're just within my area here in NYC.. just worrying that if i do, it might end up somewhere else considering most of the applicants' stuff would be sent in through mail.. thanks.

When you hand-deliver anything, just make sure that you go to the same address that FedEx goes (no PO boxes). Also note that some shools have different addresses for US Mail and express services.

What is everyone's background here? I finished school in 2007 and worked at a large-ish firm in Boston for a little over a year. I was planning on applying for grad school next year, but figured I might as well do it now.

Also, I live fairly close to the GSD, anyone know about options for hand delivering there? I tried to contact someone and got nowhere.

My background is probably what many schools list as non-traditional student.

I graduated in '98 B. Arch and '03 M.S. Construction. Seven years of experience in the field but no design experience. I'm just changing career paths.

I believe that the GSD website has a drop box address.

smarchitect, are you sure steven's institute in NJ has a march II program? I didn't even think they had an architecture department there.

I am looking to apply to an M Arch II for 2010. Would love to see some portfolios being sent in for this year and hear how the whole process went. thanks for starting this for the IIs.

I'd also like to see some portfolios. I'd post mine, but I am working on it right now, talk about last minute.

I graduated in May. Laid off end of summer. I worked for over a year while in school at a small boutique firm. Grades and GRE average, and I'm really pinning my hopes on my portfolio and essays (which I've had done for a while, as I've had since August to spruce it up). Trying to use this as an opportunity to apply to schools in cities I'd like to live in, and if I don't get in, I might just move to one of them anyways and continue looking for work. I was looking at the other thread, and most of the portfolios didn't really apply to us, who already have architectural schooling, so I am also interested in seeing some other portfolios.

So I called Yale's admission office yesterday and inquired as to how many people applied.

The usual number of application for MArch (she didn't distinguish between I & II) is 600~700.

This year? More than 1000.

We better have a plan b, the odds of getting in during this economy are slimmer than usual.

The numbers for Berkeley last year were 600 or 700, but only 100 or so were for the March II program. They took 11. So, keep hope alive, most of those may be March I applicants

Well, yeah, but with so many of my friends with BArch degree applying for March II to "ride out the recession," I'd assume the increase ratio is similar if not more.
Well... there's really nothing much we can do but wait and see.

Whew, slimmer chances. i wish all of us good luck, let's just hope for the best. have you guys already submitted your apps? still gotta send mine monday.

Hello! I have just sent off my final M.Arch II application (to Columbia). I'm applying to GSD, MIT, Cooper Union, Yale and the AA (London).. I live in Ireland at the moment. This is my first post but I have been reading all of the previous 'commiseration' threads which have been very interesting for me as I feel very far away from the action in Ireland!

Hi,
I'm new to the thread. I am a 4th year architecture student at Ball State applying for MArch II programs for this fall. I applied to Ball State, UVA, UNCC, UT Austin, U Washington, and U Oregon Portland. I was automatically admitted to Ball State, but that was nothing exciting because they offer positions to all their current students who have a certain GPA (they're a young MArch II program, so they're looking to retain some of their undergrads). Then last week I heard from UNCC. Their app was due way back on December 15, so naturally they're the first I've heard back from. Hope everyone else gets some good news soon!

Hey first time I write in here. Read those threads really helped me to go through the waiting time though. Thanks everyone.

Got acceptance from GSAPP via email for the MSAUD two hours ago. I only applied to this one. It was a challenge. Very exited about it. Anybody else ??

Good luck to everyone...
