Asli

Hi All,

I am going for a short trip to Berlin next week(3.5 days to be exact). This is going to be my first time. Any suggestions on not-to-be-missed-anything would be very helpful. Art, architecture, hang-out, cafes etc...

Thanks a lot !

There are some really great paintings by the Architect Schinkel in the pavilion he designed in Charlottenburg palace park. They are small, one or two are watercolors, and I think under a staircase on the first floor. They are landscapes with a few figures in profile. The figures have their backs to you and invite you to look over a bleak romantic landscape. Schinkel was a very good painter. It is said that he gave up painting for architecture when he saw an exhibition of Caspar David Friedrich's work.

It's the Belvedere in the top right-hand corner of the map.

one of the best views over berlin! takes around 45mins walk from heerstabe, and then walk around and you'll find a hole somewhere... then walk around the staircase at the back of the main structure at the back and go up, go to the top of these and then goto the middle of the room, then you'll find some dark stairs, you can walk all the way to the top dome, but the area where the two smaller domes are is really amazing! (one of the best tiramusu down herrstabe, near the station, dont go anywhere on the sq, they got a big dog, and its well cheap, esps considering this credit crunch)

ummm other things that are good are

who do tours and all sorts

and the free tour from brandenburg gate was a risk, but ended up giving him 20 euros because he was one of the best tour guides ive ever experienced! he even wrote the big sign which is where hitlers bunker is covered over!

maybe goto dr pong if you have time!

If you want to wander off of the beaten (touristy) track, visit the Bernauer strasse. the Versöhnungskirche is really beautiful, but also the Berlin wall-memorial is more than decent. There's a nice flea-market in Mauerpark on the weekends.

Also make sure to check out the Olympia-stadium. It's a perfect amalgamation of nazi-architecture and morenization. Try to catch a Herta BSC-game there. Oh, and just drop by the Unité d'Habitation, it's right around the corner.

Visit some embassies: the dutch one, the scandinavian ones...

Another architctural gem is the crematorium by Axel Schultes in Treptow. And visit Kino International. Have a pizza at Senefelder platz, visit the Altes Museum, Check out the neue wache. Eat the best fallafel in town on Oranienburger strasse. Visit the kulturbrauerei. Buy some books at pro quadrat meter (architecture, politics, society books). Visit the Helmut Newton Museum (free friday evenings). Go for a drink in the Simon Dach strasse. Try to go the Badeschiff for a swim. If that's too cold (or closed), check out Stadtbad mitte. Go see a nice concert in Mudd, Wild at Heart, Magnet or any of the other clubs. Visit the Bauhaus-archiv. See the Gedächtnis-kirche. Visit Aedes- if they have a nice exhibition. Take a stroll down the Tiergarten - visit the IBB 1957-site. Go up to the roof of the reichstag. Go mutlicultural in Kreuzberg. Have a look at the Akademie am Pariser Platz by Behnisch. Visit the former Stasi-centre Hohenschönhausen. Have a peek at Berlin Tempelhof airport. Go to the Jüdisches Museum by Liebeskind (even though it's not that great) - visit the topographie des terrors... Get awestruck at the Pergamom-museum. Visit the club on the alexanderplatz on the top floors of the old DDR-travel agency. And there's a still a lot more...
