The Doomsday Thread

WonderK

This is a half-hearted humorous attempt on my part to put our collective worry in one place. Part of me thinks that if I put it on a list, it won't be so bad.

As I expect witty banter with equal parts inappropriate commenting to follow, please include in each post at least one of the following:

1) An example of how the world is crumbling around us
or
2) Helpful hints for zombie escape plans
or
3) Something funny to take our minds off 1 and 2

Naturally I will start.

Hurricane Ike assaulted my home town of Cincinnati today with 70 mph winds but apparently no rain. This became problematic when the wind started throwing transformers around and started fires in, among other things, a suburban condo complex, an Elk Lodge, and Findlay Market, a Downtown Cincy landmark only a few blocks from where I used to live.

Video here: http://www.wlwt.com/video/17471670/index.html

Fortunately it doesn't look like it did too much damage.

Well I was talking about that too. All you have to do is visit a news page, close your eyes, and point, and you've got sh*t hitting the fan.

Here's one just for you, aspect:

They are calling it one of the most dramatic days in Wall Street history and some are already starting to talk about the crash of 1987. What do we think, is there going to be another Black Monday tomorrow?

The good news (?) is that Bank of America seems to be taking its newest acquisition in stride.

Bad: Indianapolis is such a mind-numbingly boring city that the arrival of a chain called "Jody Maroni's Sausage Kingdom" is actually news.

Good: We seem to be somewhat insulated from disaster (financial, riots, Hurricane Ike), and I can always call vado and laugh about the name "Sausage Kingdom".

Also, a preemptive request: though I'm thrilled to see the dancing van damme above again, please no one post that Hasselhoff image that goes infinitely toward his crotch, slows down the forum too much. Thanks!

I agree with lb on the Hasselhoff!

The stocks are volatile today. I don't think they will end up that bad though.

Timely thread. Good thing I'm planning a trip to Cincinnati soon.... Mark Twain once said that if the world comes to an end, he wants to be in Cincinnati for the occasion, because everything in the city happens 10 years late.

i don't have anything especially funny to share but i will just share something that's been on my mind since this.

wallace wasn't just brilliant, he was able to put both human foibles and catastrophic troubles in a larger context, turn them on their heads and make them - by turns - hilarious or deadly serious. how does someone with this ability and, from all indications, a support network of peers/friends/relations, completely lose hope?

i keep thinking that the bigger picture he was able to conjure just started to look too bleak - that he hadn't hit bottom personally so much as he lost faith that the world could be ok again.

i know that i'm probably taking this too far, but i can't help that it's in my head...

Interesting to me in regard to your post, Steven, is that Wallace did not have children.

I think it is incredibly easy to conjure up a view of the world that seems too bleak. But I wonder if having children makes that better or worse? I often wonder if I delude myself into thinking things will all be OK because I can't bear the thought of my child living in a world that isn't? And then since I can't allow myself to see the entire world as too bleak, I end up not seeing it that way.

So maybe children can make one delusional in a positive way. Though plenty of people kill themselves who have kids. It's definitely a paradox.

And a funny addendum to this post....ummm.....how about justalittleguy, which I've always found cuter than cuteoverload?

I had my own Hurrican Ike this weekend...

on my way back into Boston from the South Shore Ikea, where I went to buy a nicely priced and attractive couch, my car was hit by a bus, owned by none other than a man named Ike.

FLMike, are you OK?!? There have been entirely too many wrecks in ArchinectorLand lately.

Besides Findlay Market catching on fire in Cincy, Grammer's also caught on fire...directly across the street from my old apartment building. Here's a photo of the chaos, you can see my former abode on the right hand side of the photo in front of the fire truck:

LIFE IS GOOD...

as long as you don't live in Louisiana or eastern Texas.

as long as you didn't invest in Lehman Brothers

......................................................................................

WASHINGTON - Urgently trying to keep cash flowing amid a Wall Street meltdown, the Federal Reserve on Tuesday pumped $50 billion into the nation's financial system to help ease credit stresses.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's action comes in addition to its regular market operations to inject $20 billion into the system slated for the day.

.......................................................................................

doesn't this go against every rule we were taught in Economics 101 ?

are they just printing more worthless paper ??? WTF ?

on a brighter note, is everyone enjoying AutoCAD Architecture 2009 ?

LB - my mom has been a teacher for 40 or so years, and is generally optimistic about the future... however... The kids lately coming up are smart, but not very creative or imaginative (she says "they lack that spark they once had"). I say keep your kids away from video games, tv, and make sure they have a good amount unstructured play time.

I think the same thing with adults - not enough unstructured play time... too much work makes jack dull boy. maybe if we all dance like van dam...

I think there's some truth to that observation.... In addition to passive activities like video games, TV, and the internet, I think the schools have a much greater focus on "teaching to the test" than on critical thinking or problem-solving skills. Kids may be slightly more knowledgeable about facts and figures, but I worry that creativity and critical thinking skills are already in far too short supply these days.

thanks for the concern, wonderk, but I'm fine luckily... the car's in a bad place, though.

sorry to hear about all the bad news with the dogs. I had a great cat that died a few years back right around this time in September, and it was tough.

in any event, everything's going to shit, but honestly we've had it coming, I think. and hopefully, after this people will see the need for some government regulation. I think Adam Smith's "invisible hand" looks a little something like this right now:

WonderK - i thought my brother and i were the only
ones that noticed Jean Claude in "Breakin"

anyway my friend and i decided to hold up in the local
Outdoor world(in the event that zombies do rise and attack) where they have guns, supplies and food. And when
we run out we'll build a bridge next door to Bj's and live off of that
food. Securing the large windows with large panels of wood, going up to the roof and popping the zombies whenever i feel like unloading a few, and if stragglers show up, try and save em, bring them into our fort.
kinda like Dawn of the dead

but the questions is, What kind of zombies are we discussing here?

From what i know, there are five kinds

28 days/weeks later zombies - fast, agressive, desiring your flesh, and a smart enough to climb, break or dismantle whatever it is separating you from them. if bit, you turn

I am legend zombies - fast, aggressive, desiring your flesh, but only come out at night.if bit, you turn

Regular Zombies - slow, agressive when its time to feed, will feed on anything living.if bit you turn

Classic zombie - slow, agressive when its time to feed, rose from the grave, but only feed on brains, if bit, you turn

Planet terror zombies - cant remember what they were like, but i know that if the goo/slime that pops from their boils touches you, you turn

its quite obvious ive given this to too much thought, im gonna go finish my schoolwork

Outdoor World is brilliant, Philarct, the perfect solution.

But I have to object to your classification of the bad guys in 28 Days Later as "zombies". Zombies are living dead, no? And the bad people in 28 Days didn't die, they were still people: angry, angry people.

Angry like most of the women I know have been since the announcement of Palin.

Ew!!!

Philarct, thank you for the zombie breakdown. I think that is important information for everyone to keep in the back of their minds.

Apparently it's Day 3 in the Great Cincinnati Blackout of 2008. Cops are on double duty guarding stores against looting, and so on. I am quite surprised to not see a single mention of this in the national news anywhere, but it seems like the media is more concerned with what ignorant sh*t is going on in the presidential campaign instead.

Also, as this is the Doomsday thread, this news cannot be good:

Goldman Sachs profit plunged in 3rd quarter

I'm a firm believer in knowing what is going wrong where so you can mentally prepare yourself for all the bad things that are about to happen.

(BTW, for those of you of the progressive political persuasion, I always find that a visit to Huffington Post with its comically large headline font always makes me feel a bit better)

Well, all I can say is for once corporate welfare has worked in my favor. Many of my family members work for AIG, and I guess I should be thankful the Fed is seriously considering cutting them a nice, fat, low-interest loan.

DubK asked for inappropriate comments above, and I've not followed through yet, so now I will with this comment I stole from someone at Jezebel:

Ewan McGregor is now the spokemodel for Davidoff Adventure, a new fragrance that sports ad copy like this:

Its fresh spicy woody composition is daring and elemental, inspired by the world's great wildernesses and raw, masculine emotion

And here's the comment I wish I'd come up with: If I could bottle the smell of Ewan McGregor I'd spray it around my house like Febreze.

Yeah.
