New Haven visit

thenewold

I'm visiting New Haven. Can anyone chime in with their own travel guide suggestions? Architecture, food, shops, bars, etc. Thanks.

Rudolph's A&A Building - go explore the 37 different levels. It takes longer than you think. The Temple Street Garage is also worthwhile.

SOM's Beinecke Library (check hours beforehand).

Kahn's art galleries - visit both, they are free.

Yale residential colleges, particularly Branford/Saybrook and Pierson/Davenport, if you can get in and explore briefly. Try the dining halls around lunchtime.

Yale Sterling Library

Yale Old Campus

Bars: Anchor, Firehouse 12, 116 Crown Street (get the cocktails), Rudy's, a number of others.

Restaurants: Sally's Pizza. Sally's Pizza. Sally's Pizza. Sally's Pizza. Sally's Pizza. There are a bunch of NY-Times 5-star restaurants downtown, but you'll probably be happy with Sally's Pizza, frites and burgers from Rudy's (only authentic Belgian frites in the Northeast), and random falafels, etc. There are hundreds of restaurants within a few blocks of the Yale campus, serving just about every type of food, so enjoy. For sushi, try Miso.

Coffee: Fuel in Wooster Square (daytime hours), Koffee on Audubon Street, Willoughby's on Church and Grove, and Woodlands (two locations) are probably the best bet for a fresh roast. There is a real coffee roaster in an industrial part of the Fair Haven district, but he's only open 6am to 9am, still worthwhile if you're interested in coffee.

Sights: Go to the top of East Rock, which is located in the wealthy section of New Haven just north of campus, for an incredible view of the region and the ocean. It's totally worth the trip up there. You can also bicycle down to any of the beaches in the area, or out to Sleeping Giant State Park, fairly easily. Interesting neighborhoods to wander: Wooster Square, East Rock and Downtown.

Bring a bicycle or rent one at the local shop to get around.

"At the Yale Center for British Art in the large window of the top floor gallery facing closest to the New Haven Green in the general lower right corner of the window glass are the scant remains of what looks to be a mosquito embedded in the glass. I call it Teeny."
