must read books

suwatch

So I'm going to start work soon and I was thinking about reading books on my commute. I apologize in advance if there is already a thread about this but I searched for "books" "must read" and "good read" and I didn't really find what I was looking for. Also if you know of any thread pertaining to this subject I would appreciate the link to it.

Anyway, I'm looking for books that are more about the text than they are about the images. The subject matter being architecture of course, anything pertaining to architecture/urbanism is game. In particular, I'm looking for the "classics." For example Delirious New York, Learning from Las Vegas, and Life and Death of American Cities...I guess the books that professors sometimes refer to in class but that I haven't read...which is probably most.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help. I look forward to getting my read on soon.

I think Alan Calquhoun's Modern Architecture is excellent. It has pictures but the text is very strong. Words and Buildings by Adrian Forty is also very good, and may become a classic, who knows?

I know it is not a book, but I find that the journal Grey Room always has great articles. I read this journal infrequently and always have my mind expanded about art and architecture. It's not an easy read, but it is worth some effort.
