things i should see in chicago [or cleveland]

jennysue

i'm headed to chicago for 3 days, never been before, and looking for suggestions of buildings/neighborhoods/interesting things to see. [things off the beaten path preferred, but open to the greatest hits as well.]

driving via cleveland, will be there for a night and morning, so suggestions for something worth seeing or doing there also appreciated [a good place to see bands for example].

I'd make sure to visit Millenium Park. It isn't off the beaten path at all, but I think the Cloud Gate, Fountains and bandshell are worth seeing. While you are in the area, you can head into the loop and see the Picassao in Daley Plaza (Blues Brothers anyone?) and see a few of the classic Chicago buildings around there, such as the Rookery building, Marshall Field and Company Building, Monadnack buiilding etc. They are fairly close to one another so you can hit a few of them pretty quickly.

Hmmm - 3 days? Day 1 Loop and downtown, take a river tour, Mich Ave. Day 2 North & Northwestside / - Boutiques in Lincoln Park / Boutiques in Wicker Park. Day 3 - Westside - start day with soul food brunch at wishbone, head west to Oak Park to see Frank Lloyd Wright houses, Ernest Hemingway Museum, Unity Temple etc. Stop at conservatory on way back on Green Line, Grab dinner in little Tuscany on Taylor St. Always reasonable prices.

John Hancock Building - an obvious building to check out, but there is a really nice bar/restaurant on the top floor with a fantastic view of the city at night.

Also, hold your breath while driving through Gary, IN.

I'd actually adjust that recommendation and say just grab a drink in the signature room lounge, don't eat the food, it isn't worth it.

I agree Synergy. We were only up there for a drink or two....or 4...

Not cheap by any means, but worth the view.

search "cleveland" through the discussions link and click on some of the top threads. sounds to me like you are here for 1 night? well you can't see everything.. but the rock hall would be attraction numero uno. downtown is beautiful and accessible from that area. if you have already seen downtown i would shoot out to university circle or tremont. something there for everyone.

i would mostly recommend looking at the old threads.. its good stuff.

enjoy your time in the midwest!

goodness, 3 days in chicago -- you don't need any recommendations at all -- you will easily eat up 3 days just in walking around town and visiting the things you come across !

but if you have time to hit up a regional jem, there's always the Farnsworth house (Mies van der Rohe) about 1h15mins outside of chicago. you need a car to get to it but it is worth it.

otherwise, i always tell people not to miss the architecture boat tour, run by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. (just don't go in the heat of mid-day... trust me). it's pretty worth the money though.

don't miss the robie house if you want to see some FLW -- much better than the oak park stuff which is his earlier work and to my mind doesn't make the cut for only a 3-day trip. uh... otherwise there is wayyy too much stuff to enumerate... i second the drinks at the top of the 'cock however.
