If I had one regret about traveling the American West, it was that New Mexico had to be shaved off the itinerary due to time constraints (...a bachelor party in Vegas...shallow much?)
Fortunately, the wedding of a different pair of close friends is allowing me and a caravan of friends to make up for it. four days of wedding shite, six days of camping and tramping.
by compiling the suggestions in this thread, this thread and this thread with my personal itinerary, the result is this google map, which forms the basis of the trip primarily centered around a loop around Valles Caldera. And, yes, Vado, I'll make a point of stopping by the El Vado Motel (insert picture here, babe) and snapping a photo in my brand new "Architecture Sucks" T-shirt.
The above threads have been extremely helpful, so thank you all that contributed responses to them. If anything is missing from the google map, lemmie know. (The Pueblos and Lightning field are not labeled because they don't allow photography.)
So, I'll be in Northern NM from Aug. 20-30, spending the first half of the trip in Albuquerque (505, babe!), likely perusing the UNM campus and helping 1st year architecture students in Predock's new building figure out what a Mayline is for.
I'd enjoy the opportunity to meet with archinect members in Albuquerque and Northern New Mexico (all two of you) for a meetup, some green sauce and and drink or two. Please post here or email me at marlin@archinect.com
Check the google map: if our paths can cross it would be wonderful to meet all of you!
Go to "I did this while you were watching TV" - tinkertown museum off highway 14. You can see R.J. Ward's bottle house too. I knew the guy. Also, check out his mural art on Pete's place restauraut on highway 14 and grab some lunch.
Kelly's brew pub on Central in Nob Hill is entirely worthwhile - fish-n-chips in Albuquerque? yup! Mariposa Gallery in Nob Hill is one of my long time favorites from since they were in Old Town. I got my new, favorite, cannot-stop-wearing earrings there last Christmas. One of several Gertrude Stein's eye-dazzling antique and jewelry shops is there too. Check out her new digs near the railroad. And I recommend Il Vicino for a great spinach salad and pizza.
Indian jewelry shopping? Best deals are at the weekend flea market at the fairgrounds, Utility Shack on Central and Palms Trading Post on Lomas. If you head to Palms TP, go to Monroe's next door over and get the carne adovada, there's another Gertrude Stein shop around there too and enjoy the smell of green chile being roasted nearby at Lowe's grocery - set up a lounge chair and breathe. Predock's office is down the street on 12th.
Duran's Pharmacy has a diner worth visiting and get a truckload of the most incredible tamales ever (to take home - bring an extra suitcase) at that grocery on 4th St. in Barelas. I don't even know the name, but ask anyone in Albuquerque and they can direct you.
See if the Harwood studios is having an opening or if the National Hispanic Cultural Center (also in Barelas) is having a show (just to brag, I was on NHCC project team). Also, Jonson gallery is on UNM campus. A must see. And Gaw Meem's library (study area) at Zimmerman, UNM - exquisite.
kelly's though - the beer is swill and their food sysco heat & assemble.
fish & chips? cross central and go to two fools tavern.
can't believe i forgot the nhcc. they had an incredible exhibition up (just came down though) of roughly mid-century cuban poster/graphic design. incidentally, my mother-in-law has a piece in their permanent collection and was giving a studio tour to an nhcc contingent just yesterday afternoon.
hay vado - am i looking at the roofing work of that contractor referral?
btw, the nm museum of natural history (old town in abq) has a permanent exhibit called "startup", which has an incredible amount of hardware and information about the beginnings of the personal computer. highly recommended.
Marlin...I would help you out but the google map is not loading.
Check out the Taos west mesa if you the the chance...a bit bohemian...but seeing communities of whacky off the grid structures is pretty amazing...especially in the context of the rio grande gorge...worth it...as is the surrounding landscape...god I miss new mexico...the place where an 8 hour drive is a wonderful experience.
Stiletta: thanks for the restaurant recommendations. Jewelery shopping could possibly be interesting endeavor, as i think this wedding may be a good excuse to finally rock a hammered wire-and-walnut bolo tie. I'm too much of a socal kid, however, to ever get away with turquoise. Tinkertown, indeed. I have a soft spot for a few material treatments i'll likely peruse on this trip:
walls made of bottles, for one,
horsehair-infused ceramic glazing, and
micaceous glazing.
if southwestern aritisans specialized in 1x1 glass tiles or shira-hagi ceramics, i'd be in hog heaven.
jeffe: no indian casinos, likely because i'm a dice player and a degenerate card counter. Also, indian casinos tend not to comp drinks, if they even serve alcohol at all.
vado, chupa, and jeffe: guess i have some phone calls to make...let's see who we can get on camera. A test drive of a cooper mini with Jon Anderson sounds kinda fun...as does a road tour to all the work of Predock's disciples with Antione in tow...can i make it happen? we'll see. The turbulence house is a tough call. Albeit the residents are an artist and poet, people tend to like their privacy. Gotta call Woodward.
Big ideas, big ideas.
Again, thank you all. Chupa: my google map isnt loading, or google maps isnt loading?
Do any of you live in NM currently, or just miss it tremendously a la Quillian's "land of entrapment" assertion?
pock: I'm sure that non-smokers hotel would love me and my carton of California-taxed, R.J. Reynolds owned, Santa Fe Tobacco produced, American Spirit cigarettes.
...and incedenally, last May, my GF and I went back to Chimayo and were surprised to find a traditional "Aztrec Spring Dance" in full swing, out back..... We were amazed by the show, and then afterwards they shared their Tehache* with us . We had a lovely afternoon.
*Techache is a delicious energy drink made with Pineapple juice, indigenousness honey, and mescaline.,
Chimayo is a huge area of heroin use...true enough.
Googlemaps is loading now.
Another place to checkout is west of Albuquerque...there are some amazing little pueblos and nature...el morro, acoma pueblo, el malpais, the VLA. Here is a link to some of my NM pics on flickr...with some of the above as well as tent rocks, san pedro parks wilderness, jemez, el malpais, taos west mesa...
It looks like you have the northern circuit pretty well covered...I would make it up to Taos if you are that close...Fenton lake is ok...but Tent rocks is amazing...Jemez is wonderful...their is both cold and hot water springs there...all over the place.
Hadrian Predock did a project in Jemez that sits right off of the road
oh yeah - mesa del sol just southwest of the airport is a (potentially) huge new area for the city. predock's town center (or is it 'towne centre') is under construction there, also a jon anderson executive arch project. there's already the 'Q' studios building and a solar manufacturer built.
gotta check if sandia labs will be having one of their 'junk' slaes while you're here. pick up a spectrophotometer or laser for a song...
ooo! if ceramics interests you, see if there are any galleries or exhibitions showing Rick Dillingham works (UNM BFA alumni, sublime / and c-artoony ceramicist, pueblo pottery afficianado).
Also, (BTW) I house-sat and fled in fear when one of those huge 3-inch field spiders scrambled into the house - past the open sliding glass door - followed by a second huge field spider pursuing, I suspect, to have sex in the Hildreth Barker, La Luz-knock off development across Coors Blvd.

Archinect Travels travels to NEW MEXICO

too bad you're missing vado by a couple weeks.
lessee...
since you're up in abiquiue anyway, you can try to hit holl's turbulence house. i got to do a bit of work on it.
predock + frane's center of gravity foundation hall is in jemez.
marble brewery is supposed to be good - haven't been yet.
zimmerman library on unm;s campus is, to some, the sine qua non of john gaw meem's pueblo revival work.
espanola - where a guy at a hotel bar decided to pick a fight with gringo four-eyed me on new years eve...good times...
there's couple of sunflower markets - one at san mateo & lomas so you won't have to go to the dreaded 'westside'.
where's the indian casinos on your map?????
i'm sure i'll think of more...
Be Sure to Stay at the Monterey Non-Smokers Motel (next door east to El Vado)
theres the view...
ALWAYS a double rainbow in NM!

I am not a believer in miracles, nor am I Catholic, yet I did rub some of the magic sand from El Santuario de Chimayo in Expanola.
on my skin Psoriasis.....
Beleive it or not, I was cured.
