New York, New York

xulfus

Going to New York City in exactly 2 weeks. Any suggestions as to what I ought to see? No obvious things please (going to skip the statue of liberty and silly touristy sites and of course the Guggenheim+ MoMA is on the agenda). I am posting to find out about fantastic hidden, unappreciated or otherwise ignored projects. Cheers!

Katz's Deli is hugely overrated

I agree re: Katz's. It's one of those places you go once for the novelty of it, but I think there are other options for better food.

Crap. I was reading "The man who ate the world" by Jay Rayner. He was in search of the best meal he could get. He was sitting with Mario Batali in NYC, and asked him where the quintessential New York eating experience could be had. With such confidence, Batali said Katz.

Since I am heading to New York for Christmas and I love good food, where can I get it? Everything from the cheap neighborhood staples to the nice restaurants. I don't want to be disappointed. What about the others that I've listed? Any other red flags?

Food in NYC is so varied it can be tough to find a good authentic place to eat. Skip Times Square and other touristy spots and try to delve deeper. Some suggestions:

Dinosaur BBQ- Harlem
manducatti's - Long Island City (One of the best Italian restaurants in NYC)
The Ear Inn - TriBeCa
Morimoto's (convienient intersection of arch+food)
Lombardi's (mentioned above) is superb
The Campbell Apartment in Grand Central (just be prepared to dress appropriately and put up with some snootyness)
There used to be a great little burrito place on thompson called Harry's, it catered to the NYU crowd... don't know if it's still there...

As far as architectural highlights, the MoMA has the "home delivery" exhibit on now, which is a great chance to see some cool pre-fab up close
The whitney has one of the best staircases in NYC
The uptown and downtown apple stores
NY Times bldg
Center For Architecture on Laguardia near Washington Sq. park
Gallery on the corner of 23rd and 10th in chelsea
The highline
Comme Des garcons on 22nd, entrance by future systems
The Prada Store in SoHo by OMA (just don't play with the dressing rooms of the circular elevator, the staff get pissed haha)
longchamp store (from arch. record cover) on Greene & Spring
Storefront for Art & Arch on Kenmare by Holl
If you're going to be touristy about it, go to grand central station and ask one of the staff about the room where you can whisper on one side and have people on the other side hear you like you're next to them

There is much more beyond all this...

One of my favorite things to do is stand right on the centerline of the Time Warner Center atruim/hall and notice the continuous datum line run through the center of whole space. If you look at the curtain wall, the floor, the Williams & Sonoma sign and the ceiling you'll get what I'm saying.

For a public commercial space, it is extremely well coordinated and detailed in many instances. That's what 2.2 billion US bought you back in '04.

Thanks PodZilla. Morimoto's is a must. I just saw the latest No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain in Tokyo. A number of the scenes were with Masaharu.

Go see The Austrian Cultural Foundation on 11 East 52nd Street off Fifth Avenue by Raimund Abraham.

Also check out Lasagna 798 9th ave. L.T.L did a kick ass interior design there. Just mind the staff.

Dont forget the IAC in W Chelsea 18th and 10th. I enjoyed seeing that one in person.

e,

while we're on the subject:

Del Posto - Mario Batali's newest. Book early...book often.

Momofuku...Ssam, Noodle or the elusive Ko. David Chang's exercise in trendy deliciousness...

DiFara's - The holy grail of pizza...

then the old standby's:

Restaurant Jean-Georges, or try JGV's Perry Street in one of the Ricahrd Meier towers on the west side.

Per Se
Le Bernardin
Le Perigord - Just ate there two weeks ago. Scallops and chanterelle risotto. Floating Island was as good as ever!
Bouley - http://www.davidbouley.com/

What else off the top of my head...

Shake Shack, Grammercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park

Artisanal, Blue Hill at Stone Barn (or just Blue Hill)

i've been meaning to get to Dutchy Jerk Chicken Truck - West 51st. profiled in a recent NYTimes piece on jerk.

Veselka - all night hipster pierogies in the East Village, a classic almost as important as Katz's.

nearby Veselka is Veniero's, which is some great old-school Italian pastries like you won't find too many other places.

regarding Katz's - i love the place and would still recommend you go and eat there. split a sandwich with someone and also get the salami and eggs with fries. you won't need to eat again for a while, so don't do it for lunch before your meal at Per Se or anything.

the place is steeped in history and although you can get a better pastrami sandwich elsewhere (so i hear!) you can't get Katz's anywhere but Katz's.

i'll put some more up later if i get a chance...

thx mightyL. i always appreciate your insight.

i've got a number of those on my list. there are a number of unknowns that you've made me aware of. dutchy jerk chicken sounds damn tasty.

any thoughts on the following:

café glechik, brooklyn
hagi, west 49th
ali's kebab café, queens

url=http://www.congeevillagerestaurants.com/]congee village
the menu is massive, but i like a good congee. love mike's noodle in seattle. damn good congee.

url=http://www.babbonyc.com/]babbo
this menu appeals to me more than del posto.

Warm Lamb’s Tongue Vinaigrette with Chanterelles and a 3-Minute Egg
Pig Foot “Milanese” with Rice Beans and Arugula
Marinated Fresh Sardines with Caramelized Fennel and Lobster Oil
Lamb’s Brain “Francobolli” with Lemon and Sage
Goose Liver Ravioli with Balsamic Vinegar and Brown Butter
Beef Cheek Ravioli with Crushed Squab Liver and Black Truffles
Rabbit with Brussels Sprouts, Pancetta and Carrot Vinaigrette
Fennel Dusted Sweetbreads with Sweet and Sour Onions, Duck Bacon and Membrillo Vinegar
Deconstructed Osso Buco for Two with Saffron Orzo, Cavolo Nero and Chestnut Gremolata

omg, but which offers the better tasting food mighty?

url=http://www.prunerestaurant.com]prune
url=http://www.sakagura.com/menu.html] Sakagura

on another batali note, i have reserved the back room at url=http://www.salumicuredmeats.com/]salumi for a lunch in october for 8-10 of my friends. corkage is only $8/bottle so we will def be bringing our own juice. it's a three hour lunch. i am damn, damn excited. i heart salumi.

don't know any of 'em. be sure and give me a report though!

i haven't been to del posto, but babbo has been (and continues to be) one of NYC's best restaurants. the food is stellar. i don't know if you recall MB's earlier endeavour, Po, but Babbo was the more elaborate version he couldn't ever get away with in the 25 seat Po. anyways...i say hit either. Babbo is a bit more out there i think...but the peep's are raving about Del Posto.

back room lunch at cured meats? sounds awesome. bring an extra bottle for the staff...they'll be in an appreciative mood me thinks...

never been to congee village, though there's a great congee cafeteria on Jackson in SF that i hit on occasion. i also heart a good congee. crispy duck congee with straw mushrooms, XO sauce, some spicy chili-garlic and three or four pots of hot tea and i'm ready for a foggy night in the richmond if need be...not that i ever go to the richmond.

way back in the day when i lived in Bklyn, Prune was my favorite. i still remember the pate and triscuits, the sweetbreads with capers...damn that gal could cook. she's got some competition in the whole 1st and 1st neighborhood so i don't think they're resting on any laurels...the food is probably still good.

i'd actually keep the sushi low on the priority list...not that there isn't awesome sushi (and sake bars...decibel anyone?) but you can get killer fish in seattle any night of the week. most of the really good stuff comes frozen from japan anyways...even at nobu.

i want to again stress the value of Jean-Georges' Perry Street.

it's in the ground level of this which is alright in and of itself i guess...if RM's NYC thing is your thing too, but the point is that the food is stellar. it's probably 4/5th as good as the michelin 3* restaurant jean-georges uptown, but at way less money. crispy rabbit? hellz yeah.

enuff' said for now...more later.
