What happened to Friendster? As far as I remember, it was the first real social networking site. Then Myspace and Facebook came along, and Friendster turned into the City of Heroes to World of Warcraft (Heroes was a great game, why did I stop playing it?)
good question! it was fun for a minute, but myspace sorta trumped it because it was full of strippers and porn stars at the beginning, along with bands (which was the primary brief). i mean, who DOESN'T want 500 friends that are all flashing giant baywatch boobs?! but then it got reeled in and tame, only to get trumped by facebook, which originally promised to only be open to students of certain schools. now, of course, anyone can play.
i also remember back in 2003 when almost everyone i knew, including me, were dating people they met on friendster. it was ALMOST normal in a time when online dating was only for people who could not meet people in the real world. now it seems that nearly everyone (in NYC, at least) has a secret profile on dating sites except me (once bitten twice shy, according to great white).
anyway, do the other sites actually have better functionality, or is it purely about being part of the new? by now most of us are too old or saddled with too many real responsibilities to care, but i have been wondering myself what ever happened to friendster.
On facebook, everyone can become a spammer. In fact, having a facebook account is like having a spam folder in your e-mail, except it's all from your friends.
plus, you can play scrabble.

i have no idea what happened to friendster. as soon as i started using facebook, i deleted my friendster & myspace accounts.
i use myspace still, but more of tool to keep track of bands; dates, record promotions, and shit like that.
i heard there is a tool to keep all of your soc networks coordinated, anyone familiar with it?
now there is a business idea... something like pidgin for your IM accounts.

In other words, friendster was restrictive. The creator was a creepy control freak who took an extreme step to try and find women.
hrm... Friendster actually still exists? Like modernmonk, I deleted my Friendster account the same week I started my Facebook account.
Microsoft bought it. Then it died.
