(pic says this one's a '73, but my '71 looked exactly like this.)
my dad bought his 1971 scout ii new and, after a hard life of beach driving and being a surveyor's field truck, i inherited it in 1984. it required some putting back together and, because i had known it my whole life practically, i didn't really appreciate it. as soon as i earned enough to get a different car, i gave it back to my dad. i wish i had appreciated it because now, every time i see one, i wish i had kept mine.
this car talked, it was badass! automated voice would remind me if my gas was low, if the door was ajar, and one time it told me that my car was overheating lol
it had plush leather seats, digital display, and electric seats
my 07 scion tc doesnt even have any of those features lol
I'm still getting hand-me-down cars, but each one is better. My first car was my sister's first car...a sky blue, 1984 Cutlass Cierra lovingly named "The Blue Feces." Then my dad sold his car and I picked up his 1990 Ford Probe (in 1997). That was a good car. Manual transmission, 34 MPG. I think I drove it till about 120,000 miles, then when I moved to Boston, I sold it to my neighbor and he got a few thousand more miles out of it. This summer, my dad got another car, so I bought his 2003 Saab 9-3 off him for $3200 (with payment plan, i.e. I don't work, I don't pay). So I'm a marginally employed architect with sweet wheels. So much so that the gossipy hag/mommy bloggers in my friends' neighborhood were gossiping about me. I hate them.
1989 honda civic sedan, gold... low and a bit squarish, back when hondas were made in japan... from my aunt when she moved out of the city... that car was like my second home when away from home...
loved that car, liked the rigid feel of the road, the bog square windshield... would have liked to keep it forever if i could...
My '88 Civic station wagon has 153 K and has served almost flawlessly. It has a sophisticated engine and suspension, and details like the articulation and springing of the 5-speed shifter, perfectly replicating those in Italian cars I've owned, show the designers' respect for the driver. The car is getting old and tired, and I don't know if I'll be able to afford to keep it on the road -- but if not I'll miss it.
The home-made flying-wedge lumber and sheet-goods rack has been a big boon, turning the car into a truck when needed. The 12-foot fir 2x3's haven't sagged at all in twenty years.
I had a friend in grad school who had a home-made convertible (i.e., he torched the roof off a sedan) that he drove while wearing pilot goggles. I wish I had a picture of that. I'm reminded of him because he also built a sweet custom roof rack for a truck he had later in life.
Hasselhoff, somehow it makes sense that you once drove a Probe - you must have had some good nicknames for it, too?!
The first-generation Probe (there had been a Ford show car of the same name, I think) was said to be a good car. The second production Probe model (identical under the skin to a Mazda sporty coupe) was a fox -- sexy and smooth with impressive wrap-around glass.
Love my rack. It clamps to the roof like a Yakima, with parts made from available hardware. I didn't even have to drill holes under the hood for the front mounts; there were some 10mm tapped holes available, for some reason.
Mine more or less looked like this. No space age thrusters like the ones you showed.
Really, I say that was my first car. Sure the Cutlass was really my first and the radio changed itself and it would stall (it was automatic). But the Probe was legend.
Yes -- that's a cool car. Already something has been lost, in terms of consistency and uniformity, since the time when that body was designed -- the front half of it, at least !
1968 mustang, really cool car, got it from an older cousin, and no i was not alive when that car was made! I'm much younger than my first car. unfortunately due to the economy I'm being forced to sell it oh well.
my first car was a used 1960 MGA 1600 convertible w/ wire spoke wheels. raced against the cops all the time - lost em' on the back roads. oh....and my girlfriend at the time and i had some great petting adventures in that small cab....talk about a tight fit....whew!!!
I'm glad this thread was revived recently. It might be cool if each owner were to add a few words about what their vehicle was like to own, to drive, to maintain, or whatever.
What was your first car?

I love that rack, SDR!

It was called Betty. But of course it was known as the anal probe as well.

I forgot -- guess there were a whole bunch of Probe one-offs ?

Image posting doesn't seem to be working...
My first car, rusted holes in the floors and all! Good times, though, and thankfully my car today makes up for it! ;-)
Shit, it is just the preview that isn't working!

screw it i give up.
Fusca 1969
1981 European Ford Escort...a little different than the ones in the states! It was a fun car, but I totaled it...
Nice Volvo, trace. Early models are always closer to the designer's intent, no ?
Hmm, maybe, I had a lot of fun with it (although a top speed around 70-ish and 0-60 of 5 minutes kinda sucked)
My father had a P1800 that he put a lot of money into. That was a classy car (still too damn slow, but a lot of fun)
ford tempo '94 :D
I was afraid to ask. The beginning of "safe-looking" thicker roof pillars ?
1985 BMW 325e, 5 speed manual. 36 mpg
1993 VW here :)
my first car is Ferrari
Discount cabinets
My first Car was Opel Astra Caravan 1992
Rod, let me guess you're still paying for your ferrari now (30 years later) by soliciting dicounted cabinates on archinect?
Cars are uncool for architects. I thought every architect had only a bicycle.
Spam is uncool at Archinect -- isn't it ?

(for fluxbound) don't give up - here ya go, man !!
first a vw bug,
later, a vw fastback
and later, a head turner on the road i no longer have, a maroon color dodge dart with black vinyl top (first of two i had), great american car.
i was never into cars. i like simplicity in them.
