Intern - Los Angeles

Ron Nichols

Hey ppl..

I'm an architecture student in Europe and I want to have an internship in LA. I have a few offices I like and where I feel I can go "easily".. 2 Starchitects, 2 medium-sized firms and 1 small office.

If you know LA tell me, for each type of office, how much $ I will be able to make as an intern and how's generally the living cost there (downtown / santa monica / culver city)...

btw, I plan on staying for 6 months...

Thanks.

you'll get paid somewhere between $12-20 an hour, depending on your level of education.

you should live near where you work so you can bike/take the bus, i assume you wont have a car.

rent is around $900-1000/mo. in all those places for a 1 bedroom...im sure you could find a cheaper sublet somewhere though, if you just need a room.

Realistically, Ron you will likely get paid around $10 if you are a student intern.

You can expect to pay rent as low as $600, but you'll definitely have roommates. The best place to look would be near universities. Near USC if you work down town. Near UCLA (Palms, Culver City) if you work in West LA.

Since we are downtown, many of our Euro interns live in Koreatown or the USC area.

everyone knows you can barely live off $10/hr. if you're past 2nd year you shouldn't have to settle for that anyway.
dont bother working for such little money, stay in europe.
getting mistreated at some sucker office that doesnt pay worth a damn won't make your summer here any good.

you can get a bedroom in a 2+2 for $1000 in santa monica,
and a 1 bedroom all to yourself in culver city for $900+.
lets stop arguing about rent please.

check: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/
to get some idea.

We are paying $14-16 an hour for interns. Can't say if that is representative.

"Zoltan and Judi as employers? Not for me."
I actually like their work... what's wrong with them?

"We are paying $14-16 an hour for interns. Can't say if that is representative."
Don't you need another one? just won the last competition I was in (Europan 9 - along with a 27 years old architect and another student)..

@justavisual

i cant comment, you'll have to figure that out yourself...

however, my one experience working abroad (UK) if i earned under a certain amount, which i did since it was just a 3 month thing for summer, i didnt pay tax!

we may have the same system here in the US?
