Hey folks,
Im going to be doing a study on row houses. Was hoping I could get a few good examples. Im looking for anything new or old. Particularly good ones, but Ill check out the bad too. Thanks.
Tadao Ando's Azuma House in Sumiyoshi, Osaka, JP (1975 -1976)
It used to be that commercial buildings were taxed on the lot width (ie store frontage) and not depth. This led to deep narrow buildings/lots. To get light and air through the urban buildings they built light wells with gardens near the center, blurring interior/exterior and making a serene retreat in a busy city. Ando plays with this tradition and privacy issues while eliminating all other windows.
