since it's all about his reading of the music, the music he listened to was almost beside the point, wasn't it?

probably sousa.

I'm surprised nobody came up with the most obvious connection:

I'm in love with a Jacques Derrida
Read a page and know what I need to
Take apart my baby's heart
I'm in love
I'm in love with a Jacques Derrida
Read a page and know what I need to
Take apart my baby's heart
I'm in love

To err is to be human
To forgive is too divine
I was like an industry
Depressed and in decline

Well, I think Avant Garde composers apraoch teh closest thing to "Decon Music" possible...

...but this is a really good philosophical problem! even teh worst kind of Gothic Glam Metal doesn't begin to deconstruct anything except conservative expectations.

Derrida moonlighted as German Superstar HEINO in the 70s...

what differance does it make?

meta: there's still plenty of metal like that, its just the metal scene has been split/divided into numerous categories/subcategories to the point of ridiculousness.

but back on topic, I think Derrida would be a electro-noisecore fan: The Locust, Genghis Tron, etc.

well, i think electro noise core would be higher on a scale of avant garde than metal...i don't think you can use just blurt out an artist because they happen to be extreme or specifically obscure, but ..it has more to do with how does the music seek to defy its own genre ..Wu Tang or obscure metal genres may not make the cut in terms of the bare minumum, of "contradiction" required to qualify...on that note..

John Cage is probably the best suggestion afterall
..but perhaps i should check out klaus again, maybe a Klaus - Heino mix

i don't think derrida would have been as interested in the already-mixed up/digested stuff. ditto with avant garde in that it's already music that's taking a critical position.

it was all about HIM as the reader/critic, not the author/artist.

Steven: Right. It doesn't matter what he listened to - just that he wants us to listen to music like he would listen to music.

well, mr derrida could chose to 'listen' by rubbing his thumb on an lp, throwing a cassette across the room, or reading the liner notes of a cd, i suppose. or almost anything else which might occur to him.

I love how diagram has become the overnight darling of the archinect establishment. Unfortunately, you're all overlooking the fact that despite his contributions to continental philosophy, Derrida had profoundly poor taste in music, namely that of Michael MacDonald. Any attempt to ignore this would be "what a fool believes".

oh - you also have to buy one of his books in order to "understand."

Dylan. endless cryptic cultural material to deconstruct.

Or a pop culture incarnation like Brittany etc...

Or Too Many DJs, DJ Shadow, lots of hiphop remixing of pop culture.

George Michael - Club Tropicana. I know for a fact this was his favourite song as I once sat in his study listening to it with him.
