Happy new year to everyone. I have an open ended question so please contribute your two cents.
in no particular order please suggest what the ten most important things an architect can do to contribute to the greater good, either in their professional life or personal. Thank you.
to begin...
1. address issues of homelessness and related poverty
2. management of energy use in existing buildings
3. advocating a country wide adoption of LEED or similar agencies sustainability requirements
4. advocate for social justice as we perceive injustices built into our habitable environment
5. eat local
6. drive less
7. commit to the three R's reuse reduce recycle
8. adopt the 1% pro-bono
9. reduce carbon footprint through various measures
10. meditate on life and use yours as wisely as possible.
do something to further your own design skills. Our built landscape is increasingly ugly. You can blame the developer's low budgets or whatever, but I think that the architect has a responsibility to create things that are visually pleasing.
I'd honestly guess that the 10 in your list would be easier than this and require less work, but I think our country needs to elevate the standards of 'regular' design.
11. eat less
12. drive local
13. use less material - if all pants were assless, that would eliminate about 20% of the material used for pants. chaps = green. also miniskirts and fishnets: skirts without all the extra material... tights without all the extra material... GREEN!
14. bring the fun back.
top ten list

Great list. I would like to add:
Get involved in making policy, rather than following it.
Proliferate well-designed affordable housing.
Take more risks.
and not to be taken out of context I would add the following
grow your own
11. eat less
12. drive local
13. use less material - if all pants were assless, that would eliminate about 20% of the material used for pants. chaps = green. also miniskirts and fishnets: skirts without all the extra material... tights without all the extra material... GREEN!

"eat less, drive local" - that's a good one. i'll have to remember that.
so, namby, nudists = green?
yeah. sure. they are the greenest.
they are fun, too
what, only architects can do this?
1- take advantage of a drunk person
2- admit that the "e.t." movie sucked
3- resent dark-skinned people because they don't have to waste 4 hours each week working on their tans (except for lucky dube because he's dead)
4- admire paris hilton's strength in trying times
5- forgive licio gelli
6- exercise your right and choose not to vote
7- subscribe to architectural digest
8- drive less by hiring chaffeur/taxi
9- consider rehab as a marketing opportunity
10- embrace ennui
I think we should add, appreciate puddles, "I'm alive" statements because when he adds more they are filled with intensity and a healthy dose of wit.
