hi!
i'd love some examples of good stuff to do by a river (architecture-wise) eg steps, walls, promenades... anyone got some names for me to look at?
ta
for a truly classic boardwalk, i remember loving the one at asbury park nj in 1987. it was beautiful, with a carnival at one end and everything. i wonder if it's still there or got 'redeveloped'.
ours (louisville) is great. designed by hargreaves, huge, and with third phase now under construction. lots of event space, walking trails, a variety of ways to get up next to the river, etc.
some others i have found:
kastrup sea baths, copenhagen
barcelona waterfront installation by beth gali
norderney, germany
and this cool website: http://www.pps.org/waterfronts/ project for public spaces.
MALMO - Thorbjorn Andersson (some really nice photos in Topos)
LJUBLJANA - Joze Plecnik
i have some photos somewhere of this excellent plecnik designed embankment south of the city, near his house. stone and lawn steps, huge willows. If i find them I'll post them
randscraper, the last picture in your post reminded me of the areas around the forts in old san juan. not exactly 'designed' landscapes, but outstanding variety of spatial and architectural experiences.
[these aren't my pix, just what i could lift from flickr.]
The rivers running through Kyoto are great...the floodplains are used as linear parks throughout the city in a simple but really beautiful way, and they are very heavily used...
good boardwalks / foreshores / riveredges - any examples?

shiny- there even are some decent waterfront strips in the antipodes, like sydney...
what is this inquiry for? a studio project, other research, or a professional project?
there is always the embankments of paris, rome, and the thames....

"tied to tide" jennifer turpin, sydney harbour:
