rabbits' list:
corb - the beatles
mies - the stones
gropius - phil spector (?)
buckminster fuller - velvet underground
the smithsons - suicide
saarinen - the zombies
weil arets - sonic youth
koolhaas - bowie
H&deM - radiohead
zaha - guns'n'roses
robert smithson - joy division
judd - new order
gehry - U2
I offered a couple of substitutions for jd+no:
Reima Pietila or Sigurd Lewerentz as JD
Steven Holl as NO
some more contributions to get us started:
frank lloyd wright = the eagles
philip johnson = milli vanilli
peter zumthor = tortoise
still searching for the architect equivelents to Johnny Cash and Jonathan Richman -- please discuss ...
I think Zumthor is closer to My Bloody Valentine. Both are awesome, secretive, timeless and obsessively detailed... however they work at a glacial pace.
oh and, IMO, Robert Venturi + Denise Scott Brown = Hall + Oates
peter zumthor = tortoise? i'm trying to wrap my head around that. i think peter zumthor = +/- gordon lightfoot. he's definitely a folk rocker, but a good one.
yeah i think you are Ja... i think you need to find someone a bit more sublime... perhaps Mendes da Rocha... a clear cut structure and a sense of nostalgia.. which reveals more layers the more you experience it (woah)?
on the elctronic-ish path....
Neil Danari - Prefuse 73 (maybe)
Xefirotarch - Autechre
and for some reason - Jean Nouvel - Portishead
and to say that xefirotarch = autechre would imply that xefirotarch was at one point awesome and then decended into wankery (as opposed to always being wanky)
rem=styx
zaha=kiss
gehry=journey
morphosis=kansas
eisenman=head east
liebskind=reo speedwagon
herzog de maroon=the moody blues
zumthor= blue oyster cult
Who's the musical equivlent of Carlos Scarpa? I'm thinking underground indie rock from the 60's or 70's that has been hugely influential but largely esoteric but i don't know enough about the scene to say.
i stand by my comment on the one-hit-wonder thread.
bucky fuller = frank zappa.
no way you can put bucky with velvet underground. no knock at all on VU, but you need to go with someone who resembles BF's artful freak-a-zoid, futuristic techincal prowess and that weird-o is FZ in spades.
True. However, I think fuller resembles VU in the "Not many people bought their records, but everyone who did started a band" sense. Fuller is, essentially, the father of the whole far-out mega-structure current within architecture. Without him, we wouldn't have archigram/archizoon/constant/etc and their contemporary offspring (OMA, MVRDV, Zaha, the X-Seed 4000, FOA, et al).
sure i agree with the impact the VU had on their genre...but not the TECHNICAL PROWESS that fuller and his disciples all had as their strengths.
VU made it easy for anybody to start a band,,,without necessarily being good. the ramones were similar in that regard too.
if you think about it...between zappa and the mothers, they had a pretty hefty contribution to contemporary music. from sixties psychedelia to free-jazz to driving guitar rock to intensely structured orchestrated cacaphony.
the VU had heroin-chic folk/grunge rock sure...but i see what you mean about how they encouraged a generation of kids to just go out and make noise...
Was breifly a small time piano chick with a half hipster / half hippie fan base. now is someone your parents buy at target, which is disappointing, but is still sexy enough that when she flashes enough skin you kinda forget about all that.

lest anneke's one hit wonders thread gets totally hijacked by rabbits post equating certain architects and musicians http://www.archinect.com/forum/threads.php?id=68064_0_42_0_C let's continue all that here

and to say that xefirotarch = autechre would imply that xefirotarch was at one point awesome and then decended into wankery (as opposed to always being wanky)
true. i was definitely thinking of post tri-repetae (possible post-lp5) autechre... in that case maybe they are more akin to oma?

Who's the musical equivlent of Carlos Scarpa? I'm thinking underground indie rock from the 60's or 70's that has been hugely influential but largely esoteric but i don't know enough about the scene to say.

I would say that Scarpa could be the Pixies. People really didnt realize how influential either were at the time...
all of the detail oriented firms (TWBTA comes to mind) could be Nirvana. Basically a reinterpretation of the Pixies / Scarpa
pink floyd = dick busch
Michael Graves = __________
Robert A.M. Stern = __________
michael graves=puff daddy?
michael graves = gary glitter. definitely.
michael graves = KISS
