ok so i need some help. i need to come up with a list of songs with fake endings, brief returns, or surprise endings. brainstorming here. impt project.
i'm not sure what i mean but i've been given the challenge of coming up with a disc of songs with fake endings. i'm gonna look for songs that end and then come back, i guess.
i know this is a crazy request but make it clear if your answers are jokey because i'm going to have to go listen to all these songs and misleads will just be mean.
looking good so far. i've got two, maybe three, of what's been listed.
I think Anybody Want To Take Me Home by Ryan Adams fades out then comes back again.
And Paul McCartney's Let 'Em In fades down then pops up for the last two notes. I always thought that was cheesy, but I suppose in the 70s it was cool.
Mr. Bungle actually included "Secret Song" as a hidden track on vinyl by interweaving an additional groove in the pressing. In other words, you would never hear it unless you set the needle just right...Not as much fun on CD though. The vocal track was also recorded secretly by the bass player at the last minute without the rest of the band's knowledge. Good stuff.
there is also a song at the end of tom waits's 'mule variations' which seems to fade in half way through the song, run for about 20 seconds, then fade out again.
What's that Eric Satie piece that is very short and simple but has a long and exaggerated pompous ending? Something from "Sports et divertissements" I think?
Ohhh, wait, just got what you meant--ones that you think are over, and then they come back. Ok. There is an Interpol song that kinda does that--I'll look it up. I also remember quite a few from the late 80s early 90s--like there was a spate of them--I'll mull it over for you.
Earth Intruders by Bjork. It's on her new Volta CD. Pretty interesting b/c it sounds as though it could easily be boat horns but then you begin to wonder if it isn't perhaps a tuba playing. I still haven't figured that one out yet.
I think with any Marz Volta album you might find some examples because their entire albums tend to be one continous track with highs, lows, breaks, pauses and all sorts of crazy cool stuff.
you mean like when the beatles would fade out and you would think the song is over but they would fade back in and fade out again? galactic does that too on one song either on "coolin off" or "crazy horse mongoose"
or are you talking about surprise endings like a utah phillips story?
how about "lola"
can you elaborate on the concept?
where are you going with this?
is this something that can directly translate into ...uh...architecture?
is "meaning" relevant?
how about the last song on pearl jam "ten" where the end of the last seamlessly loops into the beginning of the first song on the album if you put the disc on repeat?
or the hidden track at the end of the last track on tool/nirvana/galactic albums
i don't really know what i mean, but those suggestions above that i've found (so far) have been helpful. this is really a meaningless project that i'm doing for fun, so don't stress out over it. no architectural connection at all except that i'm an architect and i'm doing it.
couple more:
stumble and pain - joseph arthur
the ruling class - loose fur (sort of)
casino foundation - martin sexton (i think, maybe a diff song on this album)
fake endings

Led Zeppelin, The Ocean
Phish, Bouncing Around the Room
What's a fake ending? A fade-out?
a day in the life
Lola?
that joke isn't funny anymore
Lonely, by Frente, which I put on the last cd swap, is a pop love song that breaks into Barry White at the end - is that what you mean?
november rain

"that joke isn't.." by the smiths is literally a fade out to silence/fade back in at the end
maybe 'born to run'? kind of?
white punks on dope by the tubes.
I think Anybody Want To Take Me Home by Ryan Adams fades out then comes back again.

tired of sex -- weezer from pinkerton
rocks like a mother... pretends to stop... then comes back rocking even harder... trust me on that one steven... trust me
bang and blame (rem)
I'm pretty sure My Dick in a Box has a fake ending, but don't tell anyone. I think of it as stretching the truth.
what about all those hidden tracks at the end of albums...you know...last song, followed by 10 mins of silence, then another song.
this was more common before computers showed you that the last song was 15:06 long as soon as you drop the disc in.

maybe
b
safe european home (clash)
Phish - Maze
Bullet for My Valentine - Tears don't Fall
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
I'll think of some more later
chemical warfare: the dead kennedy's
there is also a song at the end of tom waits's 'mule variations' which seems to fade in half way through the song, run for about 20 seconds, then fade out again.
like you just tuned in to something else
War Pigs - Black Sabbath
wow, this thread tells of taste and the taste ain't tasty...
arzo you have obviously never heard old weezer songs...
i always thought paranoid android had an ambiguous ending-like feel at the halftime break.
wait, how is knowing of a song indicative of a person's taste?.. did i miss something?
this is good stuff! too bad i don't have much of it.
i fake it
Nas - Can't Forget About You.
I think you will REALLY like the ending. It's not Fake, but its SURPRISE ending. It ends with Nat King Cole singing:
"That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too"
isolation-joy division
i never-rilo kiley
Heinrich Maneuver-Interpol
it takes a pause with one minute left and then finishes out.
What's that Eric Satie piece that is very short and simple but has a long and exaggerated pompous ending? Something from "Sports et divertissements" I think?
paul weller - kosmos
elvis - suspicious minds
talking heads - road to nowhere (sort of)
beach boys - caroline no (barking dogs/train)
i've got a few others that i need to follow up, make sure:
stevie wonder - they won't go when i go
police - another way of stopping
thanks for all so far. this is going to be a several weeks sort of thing, i'm thinking, so don't stop!
A Boy Named Sue? I don't know.
Beethoven's Surprise Symphony?
Ohhh, wait, just got what you meant--ones that you think are over, and then they come back. Ok. There is an Interpol song that kinda does that--I'll look it up. I also remember quite a few from the late 80s early 90s--like there was a spate of them--I'll mull it over for you.
Can you find the audio to the When Harry Met Sally orgasm scene? Fake ending indeed. Night be a good opener/closer.
I faked a Happy ending once.
apparat "like porcelain" but it's a ten minutes track....
strawberry fields also if i recall
act of apostle pt 2 (belle and sebastian) (more like 2 songs in one)
and perhaps in the 'surprise ending' cat:
enjoy the silence , master and servant (d mode)
wake up (arcade fire)
My favorite "trick" ending:
"I Predict" by Sparks
The song predicts it own ending, the last lyrics are "and this song will fade out, and this song will fade out..."
And then it ends...abruptly. :)
Oh my god, EKE, I'd forgotten that song! That's a great suggestion.
This is really random, but it was the first song I thought of:
Puttin' on the Ritz
...please don't judge me. This is like the third time ever in life I've listened to this song.
NoFx - Please play this song on the radio
Wilco - Less than you Think
The track is listed at 14 minutes, but there's actually only 3 or 4 minutes of song and 11 minutes of static. Hence, less than you think.

or do you mean a "teased" ending (kinda like phish would do)
like on this one:
