I was curious if anybody has been using a 3-D printer in conjunction with Google Earth for models?
I recently pulled in a topo file off 3D Warehouse using Rhino and then exported it to our 3D printer. I was surprised at how easy it was...
Very nice. I don't have a 3D printer, but I can see this being very easy to use in digital models as well as possibly laser cutting and layering topos. How hard would it be to get the file into FormZ or Max?
Thanks for checking it out. The trick is seeing if there is a plug-in already created for Sketchup. Rhino lets me import directly in with no problems whatsoever.

As far as exporting the file for making a physical model with a 3D printer, FormZ works really, really well. We just did a project for a firm out of Birmingham, AL and the files from FormZ were beautifully clean and we were able to have the model turned around in 24 hours. Usually it isn't that easy!
If you go this route, FormZ has a "STL" file format export that makes it easy to make the transition.

I'd like to be clear that I did use Sketchup for the design of the Zomicile. However I did not use my Sketchup to Shopbot plugin. The plugin is currently in an alpha state. It works as a proof of concept and is a valid basis for a full featured Sketchup to CNC solution. I am currently working on gathering the resources to complete the tool. For the Zomicile toolpathing I exported dxfs and used toolpathing software from www.vectric.com
