I've noticed the current paperback edition of Reyner Banham's _Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies_ has an ugly cover. Which is a shame, because the original printing featured a David Hockney painting on the cover. Buying used books online, it is often not possible to see the cover. So, I am wondering, is anyone else familiar with similiar instances (particularly in reagard to seminal texts) where it might be better to seach for and older version of an architecture-related book just for the sake of the cover?
if i like a book a lot, i usually will search for the first edition anyway. i have all my favorite books in first editions. ridiculous, maybe, but it feels like such a luxury.
it's becoming less common now, i think, but it used to be that the 1sts were so much more nicely produced/made.
old fashioned collectors'/rare book stores are the primary places you can be sure of what you're getting. there are online rare book dealers, though, that will send it for inspection.
