well since he was the strongest voice trying to protect it - including the possibility that he might buy and redevelop it himself - i suppose the nagakin capsule hotel is REALLY doomed now.
not seppuku. i have those swords too (well, not THOSE swords). it feels slightly like those pics people take holding vintage civil war replicas at the fair...
well, just a bit.
i don't know, but assume he is showing off his family crest in that pic, and maybe some seriosuly important metalwork, making sure everyone knows he is from a long line of priveleged people. my wife thinks it is a bit funny too, but also cool (she is japanese)...
kurokawa was an eccentric and interesting man. he did some amazing buildings, and a few that are not as memorable. he ran for mayor then for senate recently (along with his former movie star wife) and lost both times cuz he was mostly going on about beautifying tokyo and japan instead of responding to issues people care about like the looming pension crisis and the state of healthcare (sound familiar?). so he lost. but he did so rather stylishly, it must be said. being a millionaire and one used to it from birth makes for some interesting points of view and he was always a hoot to watch on the talk shows, as long as he didn't ry to talk actual politics (he always came off badly then).
i was kind of looking forward to seeing what he would do next. won't get the chance now. that is a shame

Kisho Kurokawa, Dead of Heart Failure at 73
how is it possible that i'm the one to bring this to the attention of this forum?
seriously, you guys are slipping.
Read the sad news HERE.
if this has in fact already been posted (did not turn up in my searches...) then please allow this thread to die a slow, morbidly painful death.

Best picture of an architect ever taken, ever.
Nice buildings too.
just saw that too...oddly, it did not turn up in a search i made here on the 'nect, but it did turn up Archinect on a google search i just did.
let the slow slide to the bottom begin.
It also brings up the question why there is no comprehensive book on japanese metabolism!
mightylittle, why would we want to let this thread die? I really enjoyed Kisho's work and it had a profound impact on me as a student.
if anything, we should repurpose this webspace for a new topic once everyone has grieved appropriately...
thanks Kisho!
No one's gonna comment on how fucking awesome that portrait is? I think we all could only hope to be .0001% as cool as Kisho was.
postal - in the spirit of reduction, if this had already been covered, that is, i would propose letting it go.
you are right though, a small blurb in the news section probably wouldn't catch the eyes of most folks on the 'nect.
Apu - i didn't comment on that portrait because i'm not worthy. [cue wayne's world intro...]
best.
portrait.
ever.

bummer.
thanks for all you did, mr kurokawa.
good to know someone else agrees with me.
the portrait would actually imply he died of seppuku
^which is one of the most hard-core ways to commit suicide
yes, if you fold the frisbee hard in your mouth, no one can take that away from you
