$25 an hour job?

mad+dash

I could not stop laughing when I saw this:

"..6. Architect -- $26.41/hour
Architects apply their knowledge of design to plan and supervise the construction of building projects according to their clients' needs and financial resources. Architects need a degree from an approved school of architecture.
Average annual salary: $55,060..."

we're making less than detectives - more excitement, more women, and now more money - i'm switching careers.

Detectives also get to carry guns. That commands a level of respect architects will never enjoy.

$55K doesn't actually surprise me much, if it includes interns/ intern architects/architects in training/our profession's greatest resource. I'm more pissed about being in the same income bracket as the perpetually undervalued Social Worker. Geez.

im sure my income alone is keeping that average down by at least 20 bucks an hour.

what do you mean vado? Tired of being paid poorly compared to other fields, tired of these salary polls on the 'nect, or tired of the misguided notion that architects are poorly compensated for their work and time?

The way I imagine, if you eliminated interns from these surveys I wouldn't be surprised if our average rose from 60k to 80k.

"by the way, some of us architects carry guns. it's not a respect thing."

Is this after you read that employee email about someone going postal on the firm? Kidding, of course. More beer, less guns!

no, one of my former bosses grew up in a shady part of detroit, and it was a security blanket. he never flashed it to anyone, but i did find a concealed permit one day and asked him about it.

i'll agree to the more beer, and more love over guns.

You knew coming into the field of architecture of the money situation. Therefore, if it was all about the money, you should have just picked a higher paying profession.

I don't mind getting paid 10-15 clams an hour as an intern but 2.50, or even minimum wage for that matter is dumb.

i made less than $3 an hour working as an intern in germany.

i'd do it again, yo. but $26.41 would be nice as well...

If the gun is concealed, it isn't going to get you more respect. When I was a little kid, Washington State passed a strict concealed weapons permit, and people started wearing holsters on their hips.

i made about 2.50 an hour working as an intern in China, then again that was enough for rent AND living expenses. I was actually really happy there.

Now I make about 2.50 an hour working as an intern in NYC and i can't afford shit!

hehe.. the going rate for unofficial student research assistants paid-off-the-books to do drawings for profs, at my school was $20-$25. And that was as much about the brown-nosing opportunities as anything else.

well, now I know not to leave money to the last thing mentioned at an interview. I was just so paranoid about not getting a job all i asked was "Is this a paid internship?" The hiring guy said "yes", the rest is history and now I pray another offer falls through, things are getting real lean up here money-wise.

don't really know where to post this, how about here? Net lifetime salaries aside, this report shows it takes 14 years for a Bachelor's degree holder to catch up to a high school degree earner and surpass him in annual salary. So, basically it doesn't pay to go to college until you are 35! (it asumes you are paying loans for your degree)scroll to figure 1.3

Meta - is that $750 or $250 an hour for a year long full-time job? I'm guessing you're talking about some kind of independant contract, because if you do the math for a full time job, $750 or $250 an hour is on par with CEOs. I've heard up to $80 an hour for a drafter, but that is an independant contract without steady work, vacation, healthcare, etc.
