If you can get coordinated with the sign replacement crews, you could possible pick up the replaced signs at salvage value or maybe a six-pack of beer.
Whatever you do, don't go thru official caltrans channels. Try and go to the sign crews themselves armed with that six pack. At the very least, you'll get some good roadkill stories.

The state highway department donated them to the Rural Studio when they used them, but that was 15 years ago now.
