Role of a designer in the future

laistm

What are your ideas about the role of a designer in the future? Already we have seen an increase in the demands of a design with each new design having more an more complex set of criteria to fulfill. In a world striving toward sustainability, one more very sensitive criteria has been added to everything a designer now designs. In the past, for example, the masons built the gothic church for the single purpose of worship. Nowadays there are many more parameters of design that need to be satisfied. What could the role of the designer in the future?

Design Your Life

The trend is already towards this direction, with full service communities (lofts, apts., sfr, movie theaters, retails, restaurants, etc., all being built at one time).

Continued specialization - elderly communities, mixed, religious (ugh), young, dinks, etc., etc.

I still prefer to 'true' amenities that develop over decades and add real charm to an area. However, having a live/work area that has everything I need, including mass transit, within a few blocks is damn nice.
