Its like asking which grad school is the best-you have to analyze what you personally want to glean from said experiance...Im sure there are great firms in LA that design beach houses if your idea of great is beach houses, likewise there are firms that design great (insert anything here) catch my drift? think of what you want and desire design wise and im sure there is a firm that excels in that area in LA. my dos cents
Sorry, guess I should have clarified a little better. I don't mean "I'm looking for a place to work, find me the best place" sort of thing, but what do each of you look for from an architect and which one currently practicing in L.A. is at the top of his or her game in that area. Process/methodology, aesthetic, fabrication, computer technology, etc. If Arch Record were to do an article on the Top 10 Architects in L.A. doing new and exciting things, who would they be?
Yeah, it depends on what you want. But since yee be wanting a list mine follows with my possibly rash/inaccurate judgements:
Really Interesting, but ethically questionable: David Hertz
New, smart and safe, but without much of a track record yet: Assembledge+
Always interesting but sloppy: Pugh + Scarpa
Poised for greatness, or total and deserved self-destruction: SPF:a
More powerful than ever, but clearly in reruns: FOGA
Riding high and desperately trying to avoid Richard Meier's fate: Morphosis
Really Interesting, but not professionally mature yet: Daly\Genik
Currently limping, but poised for something big: Ball-Nogues
Interesting, new, but now raising a child AND a practice: Taalman/Koch
Timeless, poetic, bizarre, and surprisingly little known: Nadir Khalili
l.a. architects
Who do you guys think are the best architects/offices in L.A. right now?
that is an open ended question...

the one having the most fun
Any office with manditory nude fridays. Personally I don't see how you could go wrong with that, especially in LA.
