my first was HP this one I'm typing from is a Dell
truth: HP was fast but got super hot:: dangerously so and the battery life was minimal. It weighed 11.5lbs without the power cord. But it was a sexy sexy beast of a machine.
my Dell also 17" is WAY faster and I'm running about a gig of RAM more than adequate for most graphics solutions esp with the core duo processor (that's the trick kiddies). And it doesn't get hot, I've had this on my lap way longer than I could try with the HP without singeing my legs or worse something else. That said the finish has begun to fade , disappointingly so but its a work horse and I'd likely buy another whenever that time comes
