Very happy so far - the dual core seems to make a huge difference to multi-tasking. Only had 2 days experience with it, though.

Video card gets a bit sluggish with lots of geomtry so you have to be creative with the layers in MAX, but it's been super stable, rock solid for two years and only cost $800.

Clevo D900K purchased from www.xtremenotebooks.com (same notebook that voodoo and boxx were selling for an additional 2k, but it had thier pretty logos on it instead).
Destroys my desktop... however it's been extreeeeeeemly disapointingly unreliable. When I got it the RAM was unsteated and was causing all kinds of problems. It periodically wont boot up. The backlight in the screen went out about a month ago. And now it's dead. 1 week after the warranty expired. $4k and it lasted one year. It was fast, but I'm not happy can't say it was money well spent. I know notebooks aren't the best, but I was hoping for at least 2 years out of it. Also I wasn't impressed with xtreme's support.... or lack thereof.

Rental (Supermicro case, I think bellcomputer builds thier own)
Super fast on the rendering side. Ironically the workstation cards dont seem well suited to 3DS Max so max crashes some times due to video errors. Max is more DirectX, workstation cards are OpenGL.... game cards are DirectX... I use max almost exclusively so I find the high end game cards better for max, and my wallet, and I can play games on them to boot.
When you say a rendering machine do you mean this will be dedicated to rendering, or do you mean a workstation on which all 3D activites (modeling texturing etc.) will take place?
If it's pure rendering you dont even need a video card. If it's end all be all it needs the most bad ass of everything unfortunately...
My only advice on video cards is basically above; If you primarily use max I'd saver your money on the a workstation card and look at something like a GeForce 8800GTX. But if you're using Alias stuff (or ?) than a workstation card might not be a bad idea.
Oh yes almost forgot I recently aquired 2 2407 WFP 24" Dell LCD's.. I can't say enough good stuff...

Plans are in to works to salvage the case of the beast as well as the hard drive/sound card/maybe video card and turn it into a workstation. Last i checked (a year ago) i was going to go with a pentium based system, it would really only cost me about $500 bucks for the upgrades I want plus whatever a big monitor would cost but I haven't prioritized the money. At this point I may just go with another laptop, but the idea of anything Vista related, even a couple more years from now scares me.
i meant the dedicated machine on which the renderings will be processed. just hit the button and leave it be. i figured the video card wouldn't do much. but i've heard some programs can borrow from the graphics processor? in any case. i'm thinking i might go quad core as the intel q6600 processors are about to drop in price with the new quad cores coming out.
at school it's a waste of my time as i wait for something to render on my computer so i figured it's worth spending some dough on a box with lots of processor power and ram to crank the renderings out while i can still work on my other machine and be productive. might be sharing the comp. and splitting the cost w/ a classmate as we won't be rendering all the time and could queue up the renders. it'll probably be a self-build salvaging old harddrives and powersources and such.

kdoll: Whatever you choose (I'd go for a MacBook), don't use Columbia's machines. They're not in the greatest shape, both externally and internally. I saw a few freakouts last year when the crashed or froze.
