OK, boys and girls. Time to put down your phallic erections and compare computer specs. I'm not looking for who's the biggest etc etc... I was thinking instead this could become a very interesting cross section of typical computer specs in architecture toay.
I'm just looking for personal opinions, but with some key info such as Student/Professional?
Specs?
Happy/not happy with current performance? etc
It should get more interesting as more people resond, so I'll kick off now:
Student
Old computer (5 yrs old):
1.2Ghz AMD (32bit single core)
~750MB DDR RAM (500MB added)
80GB HD (+ added 160GB HD)
Some crappy included-in-cost graphics card.
Very Happy until last year, when it died on it's feet.
New computer:
2.6Ghz AMD (64bit Dual core)
2GB DDR2 RAM
320GB H
25MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro PCI Express
Very happy so far - the dual core seems to make a huge difference to multi-tasking. Only had 2 days experience with it, though.
ibm lenovo t60p
2.0ghz dual core
2gb ram
100 g HD
ATI Radeon Mobility v5200 @ 512mb
running XP pro.
add'l goodies:
500 gb WD external HD
Samsung 226BW 22" LCD monitor
logitech s530 bundle mouse/keyboard (yes it's for a mac but it works perfectly w/ a pc)
looking to buy a rendering machine...any rec's on the build?
thinking maybe a quad core 2.0 ghz with 300gb hd, 4 gigs ram? any ideas on what video card?
that kinda sounded like a Chuck Norris description, but then i realized that Chuck Norris doesn't need a vest. He'll roundhouse kick you in the face resulting in your insant death if you even think about harming him.
And the fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun...
And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O"...
Written down the side of mine...
Should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now... Fuck off!
Video card gets a bit sluggish with lots of geomtry so you have to be creative with the layers in MAX, but it's been super stable, rock solid for two years and only cost $800.
------------------------------------------------
Notebook
Clevo D900K purchased from www.xtremenotebooks.com (same notebook that voodoo and boxx were selling for an additional 2k, but it had thier pretty logos on it instead).
Destroys my desktop... however it's been extreeeeeeemly disapointingly unreliable. When I got it the RAM was unsteated and was causing all kinds of problems. It periodically wont boot up. The backlight in the screen went out about a month ago. And now it's dead. 1 week after the warranty expired. $4k and it lasted one year. It was fast, but I'm not happy can't say it was money well spent. I know notebooks aren't the best, but I was hoping for at least 2 years out of it. Also I wasn't impressed with xtreme's support.... or lack thereof.
------------------------------------------------
Rental (Supermicro case, I think bellcomputer builds thier own)
Super fast on the rendering side. Ironically the workstation cards dont seem well suited to 3DS Max so max crashes some times due to video errors. Max is more DirectX, workstation cards are OpenGL.... game cards are DirectX... I use max almost exclusively so I find the high end game cards better for max, and my wallet, and I can play games on them to boot.
When you say a rendering machine do you mean this will be dedicated to rendering, or do you mean a workstation on which all 3D activites (modeling texturing etc.) will take place?
If it's pure rendering you dont even need a video card. If it's end all be all it needs the most bad ass of everything unfortunately...
My only advice on video cards is basically above; If you primarily use max I'd saver your money on the a workstation card and look at something like a GeForce 8800GTX. But if you're using Alias stuff (or ?) than a workstation card might not be a bad idea.
Oh yes almost forgot I recently aquired 2 2407 WFP 24" Dell LCD's.. I can't say enough good stuff...
1.5 ghz AMD Athlon
ATI Radeon 9800 XT w. 256 MB VRAM
Two 100 gig hard drives (one of which is fubared)
512 MB RAM
Plans are in to works to salvage the case of the beast as well as the hard drive/sound card/maybe video card and turn it into a workstation. Last i checked (a year ago) i was going to go with a pentium based system, it would really only cost me about $500 bucks for the upgrades I want plus whatever a big monitor would cost but I haven't prioritized the money. At this point I may just go with another laptop, but the idea of anything Vista related, even a couple more years from now scares me.
i meant the dedicated machine on which the renderings will be processed. just hit the button and leave it be. i figured the video card wouldn't do much. but i've heard some programs can borrow from the graphics processor? in any case. i'm thinking i might go quad core as the intel q6600 processors are about to drop in price with the new quad cores coming out.
at school it's a waste of my time as i wait for something to render on my computer so i figured it's worth spending some dough on a box with lots of processor power and ram to crank the renderings out while i can still work on my other machine and be productive. might be sharing the comp. and splitting the cost w/ a classmate as we won't be rendering all the time and could queue up the renders. it'll probably be a self-build salvaging old harddrives and powersources and such.
student/pro
workstation - boxx 7300 dual opteron
2 - opteron 248's
150gb raptorhd (OS, programs, and working files)
250gb storage hd
750gb backup hd
4gb's ram
quadrofx 3400
upgrading RAM and to xp64 soon
(one of the fastest available when i bought it, still has plenty of grunt but is slower than some overclocked core2 systems. I've kept it around because it can hold loads of ram and boxx builds an anvil of a computer)
verdict: way happy
4 - dual 3.2ghz xeon rendernodes
(just cheap and dumb mules i built to network/offload and distribute renderings)
verdict: happy
1 - sager 8890 laptop
(again, the fastest available at time of purchase but now it's a bit fickle and nearly as thick as a BigMac box and louder than a hair dryer)
verdict: was but not happy now
am getting dell M65
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor
Nvidia Quadro FX 350M 512MB with Turbocache
2GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x 1GB)
100GB; 7200rpm
blutooth and the wrx
some media software...but no arch stuff...

2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT
160G 7200RPM SATA HDD

(this graphics card may or may not handle BIM well - will see come fall)
3d-max - sketchup
adobe suite
Single QX6800 chip on a FSB 1333MHz supported motherboard.
Most likely Asus Striker.
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512mb
WD Raptor boot drive
2GB of Kingston KHX11000
command+option+esc got me excited with the 2X Dual Core Xeons. On a Tyan mobo I assume?
xeon quad core x3220 @ 3.0 GHZ
quadro 3500
2.75 TB storage (2 1TBs and one 750GB)
2GB Ram
xp x64
...all with 0 fans (Modified zalman heatsink case, for normal use I do have a few fans on the HDs wired to a switch and a fan controller, but I have the option for total silence without anything melting)
kdoll: Whatever you choose (I'd go for a MacBook), don't use Columbia's machines. They're not in the greatest shape, both externally and internally. I saw a few freakouts last year when the crashed or froze.
Who's packing what?

chinese stars and a blow gun.....along with a bullet proof vest...... and some nunchucks for the tuff look.......
wait....
that kinda sounded like a Chuck Norris description, but then i realized that Chuck Norris doesn't need a vest. He'll roundhouse kick you in the face resulting in your insant death if you even think about harming him.
Chuck Norris recently had the idea to sell his urine as a canned beverage. We know this beverage as Red Bull.
chuck chuck chuck.....chu chu chuck....chuck chuck chuck.......chu
even chuck uses an airbag to cushion his 'stunt' fall from 4 stories.
when chuck norris wants an egg, he cracks open a chicken
