I'm doing my thing for America Today, clearing out the beer bottles
and recycling them at the grocery store.....what a fricking pain.....but it has to be done.
i think there is a lot to celebrate about America. The fact that you can openly criticize the government and the president without fear is what makes this country great.
Last night I came home a bit late and turned on the tube. I flipped about the channels and found and interesting show on the former presidents. There were all sorts of cool facts like John Quincy Adams was the first to be photographed - but I also heard facts about Christianity. Actually, they were interesting to - maybe a little embellished, but ok, that's history.
This morning I turned the TV on and heard "god god god god founded on god god". HA! I was on a Christian station. I never made the connection last night.
Anyhoo, America was founded on WHISKEY.
Now to watch a documentary that has America written all over it:
Maxed Out
holz - you can't complain about going in early to finish stuff that you'll miss while in hawaii of all places.
i mean, if you had said, i need to finish all this stuff real early before my flight to amarillo where i'll be meeting with the foreman on a jobsite for a new slaughterhouse...i'd be like, damn dude, tough day.
and mr.bojangles, this comment of yours:
The fact that you can openly criticize the government and the president without fear is what makes this country great.
i'm not sure what country you live in, but that sure does NOT ring true here in Bush's america.
mighty -
i came in early to finish a bunch of stuff so i could fly to oahu for a site visit and schmoozing a potential client for a weekend hut - better?
it'd be the first project i bring into the office.
"Kobayashi, the Japanese eating machine, recently had a wisdom tooth extracted and received chiropractic treatment due to a sore jaw. But the winner of every Nathan's hot dog competition from 2001 to 2006 showed no ill effects as he stayed with Chestnut frank-for-frank until the very end of the 12-minute competition.
Once the contest ended, the runner-up suffered a reversal — competitive eating-speak for barfing — leading to a deduction from his final total. Kobayashi finished with 63 HDBs (hot dogs and buns eaten) in his best performance ever."
ok, im wrong. you guys are right. this country is backwards and messed up and simply stating how I feel obviously deserves to be criticized. Maybe it's best for me to sit behind my computer, post pictures of bush doing stupid things, and complain about everything I don't like.
"Cheers to 231-year old experiments in governance "by the people"....yeah right."
This quote is Laughable. First of all, you say "experiment" like it is a bad thing. What do you expect it to be? Every new action that takes place is an experiment. The real question is, after 231 years does this "experiment" hold water? Based on how it has withstood 2 world wars, a cold war, been the basis for every western government in the past 231 years, and aside from a few detractors has the support of the overwhelming majority 231 years later, I would say that it was a pretty damn good experiment. It is also an experiment that I will continue to celebrate every 4th of July.
Second of all, the sarcastic "by the people" remark. Again, what do you expect? If you study the lives of the founders of "by the people" you will find that they were not perfect. Big surprise. You will also find that they had pretty lofty ideals that they perfectly understood would not be completely possible to achieve in their own life time. Not only that, but you will find that some of them did not always live up to the loftiness of there own ideals at all times. Hmmmm, sounds a lot like you and me. It also sounds like a country that is run by people like you and me. When they said "by the people and for the people" they meant it, and (in a very real way) personally risked their lives for it, again, knowing perfectly that this ideal would not be possible in their own life time.
If you want a country of perfection, devoid of all hipocrisy good luck. I wish you the best in your journey. If you want to soften that critical heart of yours and join me in celebrating the greatest experiment in the past 231 years, I will be launching bottle rockets and smiling.
I think alot of folks are pissed at the current state of things black, frankly i think ours is a pretty unhealthy democracy and the two-party system is at the core of that issue. Its a damn shame considering the fact that ours is the first "democracy" to establish itself after the fall of the old greek/roman systems of popular governance in the west. I think we all know America's promise and alot of us desperately want it to be real. Until the experiment is finnally fully realized, which will probably be never, the people must push our government constantly towards that end. So here's to the great American tradition of bitching about government and stop being so critical of those that do.
So here's to the revolution and I end with a quote from old TJ:
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
I think that a lot of the complaining over the state of America is just sour grapes because their side is losing. It happened with the Right after 8 years of Clinton and now it is happening with the Left after 8 years of Bush. You will get your chance to move this country closer to socialism next election.
Socialism has all different flavors - just like democracy. And what some people seem to think of as "socialism" now was considered "democracy" 40 years ago.
That matters little to us though, as we are a republic.
heh, black if you think i'm voting socialist (read Dem) obviously you got the wrong impression, im' definately not voting Rep though, and anybody who does thinking thats where the "libertarian, classic conservative" choice is at these days is horribly misinformed.
mr. bojangles, please don't be discouraged - I think Apurimac sums up the discontent of many here: i love the idea of America, the country's kinda fucked up a little these days though.
The ideals of America are still strong, we just need to weather this administration. I have throughout my life said I would not give up my citizenship here for many many millions of dollars - that sentiment is harder to stand by these days, but I know that what goes around comes around and eventually I will feel it strongly again.
The big question is: are things overall getting better or getting worse? I strongly believe the former, but right now is indeed a tough time to be proud of what America is, though easy to be proud of what America stands for.
lb, you're a mom and hence an eternal optimist. i am not so i'll be the eternal pessimist.

le bossman, ill tell you why i think so many younger people lean socialist. its because we havent lived long enough to have the compassion beaten out of us, or perhaps where young enough to not quite comprehend that in the 'grown up' american political world, compassion is not a desirable quality; it signifies weakness.
funny thing is i was a republican prior to college, went to college, had an awakening, now i am pretty damn left. don't plan on going back either; choice, guns, drugs laws, war, global environmental policies, banana republics, middle east kings, oil and did i forget Paris Hilton?
Happy Birthday America!
I know you can be scatterbrained sometimes, but we still love you!
I'm doing my thing for America Today, clearing out the beer bottles

i think there is a lot to celebrate about America. The fact that you can openly criticize the government and the president without fear is what makes this country great.
happy birthday, norther neighbour can you believe its been 231 years since you were a member of the commonwealth. Oh what wonderful days those were.
FRAC,
as the offspring of career officers and the only of 3 kids to bypass an academy appointment, i know how powerful the symbols of the u.s. are.
i also believe this country could be great again, a world leader, and not in the GWOT sense, either.
but until congress grows some
and the juducial and executive branches stop treading on my constitution, i'll stand by the distressed flag.
though maybe all it really needs is a little love and some good ol' fashioned steam cleaning

i'd come in early in exchange for that.
schmoozing clients is one of my specialties!
happy fourth of july.
i'm celebrating by watching the twilight zone marathon!
"it's a cook book! a cook book!!!"
America is back on top!
joey chestnut eats 66 hot dots + buns, kobayashi can only stomach 63
wooh!!!1 usa!
dude, kobayashi's got arthritis of the jaw and still got 63 dogs?
the great kobayashi was recently injured.
i'm a big fan of chestnut though.
FRAC - you see him in the Wing Bowl?
"Look, you've made Serak the Preparer cry!"
We're going to see some of america's pasttime - competitive hot dog eating - at a baseball game.
nope, didn't see the wing bowl ..
"Kobayashi, the Japanese eating machine, recently had a wisdom tooth extracted and received chiropractic treatment due to a sore jaw. either way, they both beat the previous world record of 59,5 HD&B's.
INSANE!

yo, that's funny, openly criticize without fear...? tell that to Valerie Plam and her husband....i nearly choked on my hot dog.
ok, im wrong. you guys are right. this country is backwards and messed up and simply stating how I feel obviously deserves to be criticized. Maybe it's best for me to sit behind my computer, post pictures of bush doing stupid things, and complain about everything I don't like.
There's the true american spirit mr. bojangles!
Happy B. Day America!
And for all you Rebs and Dems who may see this page:
i love the idea of America, the country's kinda fucked up a little these days though.

i'll take socialism any day over what anyone here calls "democracy," because what we have here is far from it.
I think that a lot of the complaining over the state of America is just sour grapes because their side is losing. "their side" and whose the their?
francis, i liked you much better when you were singing about monkey's going to heaven...
who ever is losing.
Your right, I liked me much better back then as well.
socialism is a beautiful thing .. in theory
Socialism has all different flavors - just like democracy. And what some people seem to think of as "socialism" now was considered "democracy" 40 years ago.
That matters little to us though, as we are a republic.
why are so many young people socialists? you know that you will all become republicans when you get older, right?
