In one of my previous trips to NYC, my brother took me & my lady to a bar - a hipster bar somewhere in lower manhattan, where I ordered us a round of Sierra Nevada's - though it may be the Microsoft of Microbrews, it still is a good solid beer which has a good balance. Next to me were some trucker-behatted hipsters (who had apparently not gotten the memo that trucker hats were already passe) who ordered a round of PBR's.
16 oz. Sierra Nevada: $4.50
12 oz. can of PBR $5.00
This is one reason it is doubtful I will ever move to NYC.
Someone in my office mentioned the other day that ICEHOUSE is still around - blech!
and crowbert -- I think of Sam Adams as the MS of microbrews.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is widely regarded as one of the best of the species -- and I concur.
well, as long as evilplatypus is talking about PBR and Old Style, why not add Old Milwakee to the list. They still make it, right? Maybe not. There use to be another swill beer made years ago, and I recall my burn-out high school budies buying a 24 pack for like $10 bucks. Damned if I can remember the name of the stuff - had a name that reminded you of a lake or a minnow or somthing like that. Swill none-the-less.
PBR Vs. Old Style

Legally speaking, malt liquor is NOT beer.
That seems like a fun-filled fact.

I agree, db. All Sam Adams products have the same annoying taste that I can't put my finger on. Sort of like MS.
Sierra Nevada on the other hand is mighty tasty.
oh, how i miss yuengling... wish they had it here in chicago.
old style's not so bad, they all sorta taste the same really. Except Schlitz and Natty Ice/Natty Ice... I agree, those are just fucking horrendous.
does anyone remember when the new york times outed pbr as the hipster beer of choice(along with vice magazine and mesh backs). that sucked.
