I saw this book [La Chapelle: Artists and Prostitutes] in person and held it in my tiny hands. It's huge.

Asking price: $2500 smackers.

only an architect would spend 4 digits on what is basically a picture book...

ugh... i saw that as well... $1400 US for a book of sketches and photographs...

for that price, you could actually experience some of his projects.
i kinda hope no one buys this book so that the whiny drunk @ columbia and his cohorts in australia see how absurd this is.
zumthor's works was less than 1/10 of that when it came out, and continues to be, along with my kahn and fehn complete works, a book that never leaves my side...

i especially like the disclaimer from the publisher, "the price of the folio may change without notice"

so i stopped by this little design store and found 3 copies of mvrdv's metacity/datatown on the 75% off rack. it was originally marked as $30, but with the discount, each one came out to around 7. bought them thinking they were so cheap.

turns out that it's out of print, and the cheapest used ones on amazon sell for over $325.

i paid $21 for three books. i suppose they're worth $900+ in total? not a bad return i suppose.

eh mdler,

let us know how it goes. i have an original "works" that i bought new for around $65. It's in very good condition, with only a small portion of the cover lettering flaking off. I have since wrapped it in shrink-wrap and placed it in the bank safety-deposit box. i figure in about 15 years it will be worth much more. curious to hear your results.

That first book is a mighty capitalist gesture for a socialist like Frampton!

anyone interested in the mies van der rohe archive- should look at "ludwig mies van der rohe- drawings in the collection of the museum of modern art". its an 18x25 commemorative folio produced by moma in 1969 to commemorate his death- supposedly featuring all of his drawings in their collection. i picked up an almost mint copy in a used bookstore in ithaca a few years ago for less than $300- and they can usually be had on amazon or campusi for less than $500.

its enormous and gold and i almost never look at it. but it has that "rare" look to it, and you can see it from anywhere in the room.

Mies archive...... I saw the original Mies archive in Dirk Lohans house. His whole library is all of Mies' books and he has the original Barcelona and Tuggenhaut chairs in his living room.

ya'lll are being cheap- 2k or so ain't much for a book. walk down to beineke, avery, loeb, or the fine arts library at penn and into the rare books collection.

I've turned the pages of an original folio of palladio that would make most of those books cited look small. oh,that edition was insured for around half a mil. we couldn't even handle the page fragment of the gutenberg. That is one of the perks that the phd students get (and I just took that class as an elective).

we discussed this topic here back in the spring.

when i consider how much the replacement cartridges cost for my ink jet printer i usually find myself baffled by how inexpensive most books are...especially the big ones with lots of full color pages.
