...Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers...

From the Talking Heads song "(Nothing) But Flowers"

it's not a dent in the middle east oil industry--- it isn't them- it's us.

stop moving all the way out to Woodbridge, VA when you work on Connecticut Ave. in DC!- stop rationalizing that you need a 3-bedroom apartment for two people!- stop saying you're 'saving money' by living 1hour or more from work! if you can't walk to it or use another form of transportation maybe it's not worth living all the way out in BFE!

and by the way- they're just going to make it $5 on May 16th.

Yup, it's the US. People need to get over teh idea that they need guest bedrooms and 2500-3000 for a small family.

I'd be fine with gas being $10 a gallon (I put about 2-3k of miles a year), but it'd kill the economy, which woudl hurt everyone.

Like it or not, nothing can change overnight without killing the US.

Sprawl is the killer of all. Not buying gas one day seems just silly, imho. Bike-to-work makes sense as you actually replace the oil/gas with man power.

Doesn't look like there was too much thought that went into this. If you still buy the gas, why does it matter when? It'll make an interesting blip in the consumption stats, but absolutely make no difference to the oil industry (well, I'd guess they'll get a chuckle out of it!).

Ultimately, we are the enemy, not the Middle East, Chevron or Exxon.

i agree with vado here. aren't high gas prices a good thing? are we ever going to switch to alternative fuels or alternative means of transportation if gas is cheap?

1.30CAD/ltr x .911 x 3.78 = $4.48USD /gal in vancouver today.

it's fine... it's the market economy... It is what it is and we will not change it. I personally hate it when people complain about this shit. It's on par with people who complain about it raining as if it will change a thing.

not going for a day isn't going to do shit... as most have said already, it's fundamental habits of our society. They know you're going to be back. I never understood these ideas. Maybe its an oil co. conspiracy now that I think about it... How about "dont drive on the 15th"? What difference does it make if you don't fill up on on the 15th but still consume just as much of that commodity on that day? Does it make you feel good to top off the tank on monday night and drive around all day tuesday screwing 'the saudi's' or 'the man' by not filling up? Think about it....

Damn this gets me worked up I think I need to take a drive to settle down....

I meant to say: has anyone seen "crude awakening"? I haven't but was talking about this with some chums and one highly recommended this film.

and earlier i was talking with my pops about dis... I'm curious to hear from those who have done the reasearch...

is bio diesel going to be readily available for millions?
it seems that there aint going to be enough crops for the masses to use ethanol; correct?

as my mini cooper 102mpg driving father said: "its all just going to be electric from nuclear when it runs out in a few years"

I kinda agree with him....

either way, it's interesting to think about all this from the perspective that no matter what you're using, there is a finite supply of energy on the planet...

I have visions of rationalist in a big hamster wheel contraption that is hooked up to a generator...there is a stick attached to her head with a bottle of whiskey dangleing from the end...run rationalist, run..

PP - there's a recent thread here on biodiesel that probably wont answer all of your questions...but might prove to be an interesting read.

there are lots of opinions on the subject.

rationalist - i couldn't agree more. expending energy on exercise seems to bring greater and greater returns.

May 15, 07 1:40 pm  ·

oh jesus, I couldn't even try to run off of whiskey! It's fuel for the mind, but not for the body. It might just be hilarious to try though.

I found myself at the gym on an elliptical trainer yesterday thinking, "Damn this is boring compared to my bike!" I think the bicycle commuting scheme might get sped up a little, because the more I bike, the less I have the heart for gym-based excersize which is so similar to a hamster wheel...

my car just sits in the parking lot of my apartment building all week long. on the errand run on saturday i drive all of 20 miles- if that. i am moving to UVA in august and i found a place w/in walking distance of the A-building. i am SERIOUSLY considering selling my car (97 camry with almost 200k miles on it- what a good car) and being a rebel (with a cause). hehe... then i can lose that 13lbs and start biking everywhere. i hate being trapped at a desk- whether it's in a firm or in a studio.

this seems like one of those precursors to an episode of six feet under...

man receives 'dont pump gas email' at work, drives home, stops at the gas station for some milk/bread (remembers not to actually buy/pump gas), gets killed by a truckdriver who runs into the gas station and subsequently explodes in a fireball.

i always loved those opening death parodies on that show. classic.

I love how green all we architects are, when in fact the act of constructing our buildings is one of the least "green" things a person can do. The greenest architecture of all is one that doesn't get built. Personally I like driving, but I drive a 1.5L hatch, and gas prices don't bother me much.

The future? 0-60 in 4 seconds, backed by Google's guys.

Nice production experiment, regardless. Less than a hundred grand for a custom car that goes that fast is actually pretty cheap (compared to a Ferrari or Lambo).

I am guessing they are sold out for years. Finally a 'cool' electric car that 'works'.

the guys from Google (Page and Brin) are actually customers, not backers, from what I read...though who knows really?

Elon Musk, the billionaire who founded PayPal is the main guy behind the company. There's a piece on them in last month's Vanity Fair.

You can reserve one for $30k...but George Clooney et al. might be ahead of you on the list.

Pretty cool car though.

Garp- I bet it's possible. I do around 475 calories most days (75-80 rpm for 30 min) on an elliptical trainer, plus weights. If they found a way to hook that stuff up so that the energy of the revolutions generated energy, don't you think the energy of 12,000 calories (really kilocalories, right? since we measure food energy differently than physicists do) would be $25 worth? Plus, I bet if people were told "If you generate X amount of electricity each month, your membership is free," they'd work harder at it.

i heard this recently: "its a government conspiracy to get us all to stop our dependence on oil. they'll just keep increasing the cost whether we have the supply or not in an effort to decrease our dependence. because if they actually TOLD us they were going to change our whole way of life we would all protest."

i would totally believe that if it werent for bush pushing to drill pipelines on the east coast.

Hybrids are a win for all. In one point of view, they don't reduce our dependency at all. Rather they extend it sort of like adding water to the juice.

I guess hybrids could be considered conspiracy?

Even if we all bike to work tomorrow, what are the chances the beef in our burger came by bike? I'd say make tomorrow a zero carbon day, but that's impossible.

Don't even walk to the farmers market! No!

Simply find a patch of grass and eat it.
