Best reason for grad school (as opposed to fulltime job): shorts and other comfortable clothes... at least if you're in So Cal, or other mild climates.

thank you so much everyone. I've been debating on whether or not I should be wearing shorts or pants, it's been keeping me up at night lately. I've always had issues wearing shorts though in a big city. To me the only people that wear shorts are tourists. Is this perhaps a rural/suburban thing to wear shorts?

Also, should I be worried with preconceived notions of leg coverings? From what I understand, it is customary in the Western world for men to wear trousers and not skirts or dresses. However, there are exceptions, such as the Scottish kilt and the Greek foustanella, worn on ceremonial occasions, as well as robes or robe-like clothing such as the cassocks, etc. of clergy and academic robes (both rarely worn in daily use today).

i dig the shants actually. i enjoy the feeling of air circulation around my calves and the free sensation of not having pants covering my shoes/ankles, but i find shorts too often not the appropriate choice for me.

shorts + pants = shants.

but i'm often seen with regular jeans cuffed up like, three rolls to avoid the chainline on the bike, then i leave 'em like that.

Just sidestep the issue altogether by not wearing them, that way no one will know how lame you really are. Which is probably pretty lame if you didn't already know about the no shorts deal.
