Putting out feelers...

Hello,

First I'll give you a little background and then get on to the questions. I got my B.S. in biology last year (May '06). Due to a lack of introspection my first years of college, and a rush to get my major finished and as much partying in as I could before I graduated I neglected to give my future plans the consideration they deserved. I fell into the pre-med path. I spent this last year working in a lab and applying to med school. There was always the nagging thought though that I wanted to do something else with my life. Long story short, I abandoned medicine, evaluated my skills and interests, and moving through careers, each one more suited to my tastes, found LA. Looking through Design with Nature and Invisible Gardens has only made me more intrigued.

Onto the Q's:

1) I have always had a creative streak, but have not taken a formal art class (at least since middle school) or created any works. So, a portfolio would need to come about through the next 10 or so months. Is this possible? Should I focus on one media or multiples? Should I consider sacrificing the big bucks for credit-by-the-hour art classes at Local State U, or opt for some cheaper, less intensive classes?

2) More importantly, do I have a shot at getting in (w/ 3.5 and what should be a decent GRE and recs)? A remote chance at the top programs?

3) Recommendations for what to do this next year, paying or non-paying?

Any advice is appreciated.

WOW Karl that's a major life decision, one that obviously took some time to reach. Unfortunately I can't give you a local perspective as I'm far enough away from LA, but nonetheless I can give you some hope.

Take some creative courses allow the wind to move you, I've seen people travel from distant fields into architecture to the point where it is the norm. That's why they have 3 M.Arch degrees!

Its going to be mostly about your portfolio little if it was formalised or not. You could try one of those academic discovery programmes offered by most architecture schools in the summer - it could only enhance your chances.

By LA I mean landscape architecture, not the city. Sorry for the confusion.

tb- your gpa is a good start, but scan through the mla threads for an idea of what the programs are looking for and what the differences between the difference mla programs are. if you are passionate, articulate, have a knack for creative thinking and visual solutions, then you may just be 'scaper material. there are also a bunch of portfolio threads to give you an idea of an architectural folio- 'scaper just have more plants.

You have till next fall before the application process kicks into high gear. So plant a garden, go hiking in the mountains, walking through the cities, take photos, sketching/drawing as much as possible, and even take a class or two in visual arts or design. And while you're doing all that, try to figure out what makes you desire to push dirt around, lay out streets, and manipulate the built enviroment...

So are you a fussy gardener who like all the flowers to be the same color? do you victorian cottage gardens? do you like healing toxic factory sites? restoring abused stream banks? planning neighborhoods and cities? providing parks for homeless? mapping hidden features beneath our feet? paving over paradise? figuring out soil mixes? capturing carbon? planting windmills? or purifying stormwater?

there are mla programs that can enable you to do any or all of these... go visit some schools while you are thinking about all these and good luck!

was your email subpoenad yet? oh, that's right, it doesn't matter... all those illegal emails were just announced as having been "Accidentally deleted" hmmmm....

you've got a shot to get into a major program, but you'll have to pump it out on the folio.

Treekiller - Thanks for the advice. That is a helpful starting place from which to go.

Holz - I service the president for pleasure...I mean serve at the pleasure of the president. A few emails might have been deleted, but I'm guessing it was nothing important. Probably just some herbal viagra.

Architechnophilia - Weed?! Please, I need to house my Coca plants. Georgie Boy's got nostrils you could drive a truck through.
