an architect friend of mine has been traveling to the uae pretty often over the last year or so. things change quickly, it's such a dynamic environment. my sense from her is that you won't get a sense of 'what's going on' until you're there seeing for yourself. development moves very quickly, but then some things that are announced with a lot of fanfare disappear even more quickly.
i kind of agree, dubai is fast growing place, and much easier to go there and sense what it is about ... you will use the taxi a lot, if you don't have a car, since they don't have public transport systems yet

I'll be going there in mid may. I love construction, so I'm looking very forward to it.
They actually have plans to develop a high speed train system there. They want to make the city all futuristic in a cheesy 70s interpretive way.
